Origins of Everless Magic
- magic originated in Nevermore
- a link was created between Nevermore and Everless in the 1450s.
- originally magic was very well-known, shared between people easily, although only a limited number of people had access to any form of magic.
- it was only in the early 1500s that Everless magic was classified and given names.
- for the early times, informal universities were established in order to teach students magic. (actual schools began to pop up in the very late 1800s)
- the number of those able to connect with Nevermore magic was far higher than the modern times.
- previously it was about .05 of the population, dropping down to .01 over the course of the early 1600s.
- Â nevermore and nevermore-aligned people dropped even further, almost being completely eliminated in Everless.
- Everless magic was organized heavily and recorded in great detail after this point.
a note written: we can do more magic than our circles! (recommended after taking the circle magic class)
Interactions with Outsiders
- during the late 1500s, a time of persecution occurred towards the magic and people of both Everless and Nevermore.
- Called the âMidnight Eraâ, it represented a shift from public knowledge of magic to the underground and secretive nature now considered normal.
- during this era, the violence and deaths near brought the end of Everless.
- during this era, privacy and secrecy spells were created, becoming some of the first types of spells and potions taught to those learning magic.
- during this era, witches ceased sharing information about magic to all and any outsiders.
- during the 1600s, the era of the Salem Witch Trials, the need to seek out and educate people with magic that were unaware of it was made essential.
- schools were created with the hope of protecting students, both aware and unaware from the threats that come from having magic.
- finally, during the mid-1900s, an outcropping of people calling themselves âHuntersâ arose, threatening the safety of Everless and Nevermore alike. (more detail given in Defensive Magic classes)
- âbe careful with whom you trust, itâs a difficult thing to have to deal with, but magic and society do not mix easily.â <- direct quote
Chapter Three already? I fear Iâm becoming far too like Rajesh Shurv. Thatâs a tragedy but nonetheless! Chapter Three. Iâve always been partial to odd numbers, they deserve more love, I would say. Iâd call this a more peaceful chapter but you never know with these kids. Weâll get through this and then get to the action, that what people are interested in these days, isnât it?
Let me just get us another cup of tea, itâll be delightful with some of Tattiâs cookies, they gave me some to share during their last visit.
âYou really want to make dinner together?â Kal asked, despite having already gone to the campus store for supplies.
âOf course!â Jules nodded, âMy mom always says that making something together is the best way to make friendships.â It was a fair idea, and fortunately, the trio before us were the kind of people to get involved in community cooking. âI asked Mary, but she refused.â
âMaryâŠsheâs kind of weird,â Ardis said, âWeâre in class together for Fifth Circle Magic.â
âOh! How did that go for you guys?â Kal fiddled with a strand of hair. She wasnât very good at starting conversations. âThat whole Guardian ritual was a bit overwhelming. Wasnât it?â
âI thought it was cool,â Jules laughed, as she grabbed vegetables to start cutting. âI was chosen by Fye? So I feel special.â
You are, Jules. You are.
âTo be honest,â Kal started, âI donât know how to really feel about any of this. How am I supposed to believe in something that Iâm just being told is mysterious and mystical?â Well, I can agree it is quite a change. I wasnât totally a believer myself for quite some time, so Iâm on her side.
âI guess itâs easier because I was able to tap into some of it before I even came here,â Ardis thought aloud. âIâve always been used to going with the flow, so magic was just exciting.â Ardis was watching Jules cut, not sure where or what to do. Kal handed him some lettuce.
âRip this apart, just enough for a salad,â Kal ordered, âI get where youâre coming from, but it just hasnât sunk in for me yet.â
âFair enough,â Jules nodded, âBut...can I ask, whatâs the Second Circle class like?â
Kal took a moment to find a word for what her first class had been like. âA lot of theory,â she said. âAfter we got through talking about the Guardians and familiars, it was mostly just concept-wise what it meant to be attuned to creation or destruction.â
âThat sounds fun,â Jules hummed, âI like the Fifth Circle though, I find it accurate that Iâm a âVoice Witchâ.â She paused her cutting of vegetables to put air quotes around her title.
âReally?â
âYeah! I like to sing,â Jules grinned. âItâs fun, though I wonder if the magic has anything to do with it now.â Carefully now, Jules. If youâre keeping your semi-popular internet musician identity a secret, then you shouldnât give up too much!
âThatâs pretty cool though,â Ardis pointed out, âI just dance, not really related to nature or anything.â
âThey did mention that Second Circle people tend to be creative,â Kal recalled, âI do art, so I guess itâs accurate.â
âWow, are we a suite of artists?â Jules laughed, âYou think Mary does anything?â No.
âI donât think so, based off our few interactions,â Kal shrugged, she was in the middle of stirring noodles. Itâs quite important to not overcook your noodles. I couldnât count the number of times Iâve forgotten that I had noodles cooking.
Oh, wait. Oh, dear. Iâll be right back.
Alright, no noodles cooking. Shall we continue?
âAnyways, so, Juli you said your Guardian was Fye?â Kal questioned, trying to return to the topic she had accidentally moved away from.
âYep!â Jules bounced on her heels, âExciting! What about you two?â
âRavere?â Kal recalled with a slight frown.
âSair,â Ardis answered a moment later.
There was a silence. Rather than an uncomfortable one, it was one made by teenagers that were all awkward in their own right and anxious enough about living together in a very new place. It had only been a few days, but those days were filled by quite a lot of new information. I donât blame them for being overwhelmed, I was, once upon a long long time ago.
âAre the noodles ready?â Jules suddenly asked, breaking the silence.
âOh, yeah!â Kal nodded, jumping back into action, âJust need to put them in bowls. Should we make a plate for Mary?â
âThat would be considered nice,â Jules said, though it wasnât really an answer. The trio started placing things on the small, pre-provided table in the little area that could be called a kitchen and dining room.
Quiet chatter was there to finally replace the silence. Talk of majors and classes. Discussion of familiars and wondering when they could appear. None of them knew about magic very deeply, which made it quite stressful.
They all seemed to forget about their wonderful room advisor Tatti, who as a third-year and resident of the Nevermore knew quite a lot about what familiars were.
âFamiliars are cool,â Jules said, âNot only cool but helpful! Weâre in a whole new world, itâll be cool to have someone there to be, like, a companion.â
âYou have a point,â Kal nodded, âI mean, it wouldnât be bad. Just when my professor described it, she made it seem a little...scary? The idea of having someone just able to talk to you in your head?â
âTelepathy, I wonder if Mind Witches can do thatâŠ.â Ardis murmured, looking down as he thought. Ardis was quite interested in learning about more than just his circle. A very good trait to have. However, the moment he realized that he had spoken aloud, he jumped. âUh, yeah. I donât know, I guess I just find it all too interesting to be worried?â Poor Ardis, always fretting over what he says.
Kal snickered, a smile on her face. âI like you, Ardis.â She paused before panic overtook her face. âI mean, I mean, I like how you think!â Kal corrected, âI like how you think, not like you, but I mean I like you but not like like youâŠ.â she trailed off, seemingly realizing how unnecessarily flustered she had gotten. âIgnore me, really.â Then thereâs Kal, fumbling rather than fretting.
Ardis shook his head, âDonât worry, I like you too!â
âYou guys are cool!â Jules said with a level of confidence that while frequent was much more than what she had shown so far. âWeâve only really just met but I think weâre all gonna get along wonderfully!â
âI wonder if we can do that with the fourth musketeer,â Kal mumbled under her breath, eyeing the door to Mary Sueâs room.
âOn that note, we should explore the forest outside our dorm!â
âNo!â Ardis and Kal both answered at the same time. Oh, Iâve heard that simultaneously answering things is a sure sign of friendship! Or at least, thatâs what that friendship-making book that Cavallo bought me. Iâm not quite sure if she intended to mock me or thought Iâd appreciate it. Regardless, I added it to my collection of âbooks about people interactionâ for later use in my work.
Jules pouted, âWhy not?â
âItâs clearly dangerous,â Kal said.
âTatti told us not to go in there!â Ardis added.
âItâs dark.â
âWe definitely arenât equipped to deal with anything that could be in there!â
âItâs gonna be really dark.â
âYeah! Itâll be dark!â Ardis nodded fervently. Clearly, the two werenât interested in what risks and danger could lie in the admittedly mysterious and frequently deadly forest. I often went in there myself. I wonder if my hidden hideaway spot is still there.
I would check if I still could. However, itâs quite an adventure!
âIt could be funâŠ,â Kal said suddenly.
Julesâs eyes lit up. This was her chance!
âYes! Adventure!â She insisted, âWeâre at college. Magical college! Whatâs the harm in taking a few risks here and there?â
âWe havenât even been here a week and you want to go into the dark and mysterious and scary woods?â Ardis questioned.
âShe has a point,â Kal shrugged, âEven if Iâm not totally on board when has adventure hurt anyone?â There was a glint in her eyes, one that signaled a sort of flip of a switch. From a more logical rational Kalavathi to the Kal that wanted to do much more than sit in a classroom quietly for another four years. The dark might not be enough to discourage her now.
It was at this point, that Ardis may have given up on any type of peace in his college life. Iâm rather surprised he didnât sense this danger earlier. Maybe he didnât realize that Kal would join Jules on the side of âreckless adventureâ, certainly anyone that didnât know about her life as Razz would assume that she was a very rational person.
Kal herself knew she was being a touch irrational. She had read enough adventures to know that going into that forest would likely not be a walk in a park, yet she found herself compelled to do it anyways.
It was a small act of rebellion, considering her âsecret identity; as Razz.
Ardis leaned back in his chair. âAdventure tends to go wrong,â he pointed out, âIf weâre going to do something that dangerous, can we at least wait until we know a bit more about magic? Like, when we know some more âhereâs how to not dieâ stuff?â
âBoring, but fine,â Jules grinned. Ardis, you canât just give in like that! He needs to try a little harder, I would say. Maybe that will be his character development? However, as of now, Ardis just sighed and smiled weakly.
Possibly dangerous adventure just wasnât his forte. He was much better at low-risk things, like wearing a green hoodie and a face mask with a lime on it to go dance-offs and show off.
Yes, really. Ardis thinks heâs boring. We have quite the interesting cast of people before us. Letâs see how long they last without uncovering themselves as the identities they work so hard to keep hidden.
Moving on, as we often do, the trio finished up, cleaning their dishes before heading off into their own rooms.
You have to have some âme timeâ after all, especially at college!
Jules was in her Fifth Circle Magic class again that morning, when those odd people in the corner approached her. She had greeted them during the first class, to no response. She had greeted them every one of them before every one of the few classes that they had had together, yet every attempt resulted in no response. Not the type to give up, she had greeted them again before heading to her desk.
Now, shockingly, the four people stood before her. None of them spoke, rather simply handing over folded slips of paper before walking off back to where they sat.
The first one warned her to read them alone, or at least not let others read what they contained. Jules, being less rational than her roommates or friends, quickly planned to read the notes the moment she was out of class.
Before that, those aforementioned friends arrived. Asha Ocean, Melissa Nguyen, and Ăsvaldr Lykke. Yes, she made friends that quickly. Iâm quite proud.
âHey, Jules!â Asha waved, âWhat was that?â She pointed at the group leaving. âDid they talk to you?â Asha was an Energy witch, with eyes bright enough to prove it. She insists the shine is natural, but we all know she uses a spell to do so. Donât tell her I told you that, however! I quite like her visits and would quite prefer them to continue peacefully.
Jules paused, âKind of, they just looked at me, I think Iâve gained their approval?â
Ăsvaldr snickered, âI feel like thatâs probably the most magical thing that could happen here.â Ăsvaldr, a good kid, if a bit of a trickster type. He often tells me about his escapades, doing things that he certainly shouldnât be able to do. âTrust me, Iâve grown up in magic, and mysterious people talking to you is the first sign of danger.â
âYou think everything is dangerous,â Melissa scolded, âBut you insist on doing it anyways!â
âDanger is fun! Itâs adventure!â Ăsvaldr argued, âRight Jules?â He waved in the direction he had heard her voice in.
Jules could only grin. âAbsolutely! My roommate thinks itâs a bad idea to go explore the woods near our dorm.â
Ăsvaldrâs expression dropped, âWait, you live in the dorm by the West Evenfall forest, donât you?â
âI think so? Unless there are more forests by dorms,â her light tone contrasted the seriousness of Ăsvaldr as he continued to speak.
âHavenât you heard the story of Dean Ailan Creek?â Ah, yes, Ailan. The âkâ in his last name is silent, he used to hate it when people called him âCreekâ. He was very particular about it. My name is often said wrong, I never made a big fuss like he did.
âĂsvaldr, sheâs a Initus, remember?â Melissa said. I never quite got behind the use of âInitusâ to refer to new students of magic but thatâs Western Arcane Theory for you. Evenfall has their preferences and I have one as well.
âRight, right,â Ăsvaldr nodded, âSo, I guess we get to be the ones to tell you the story about the last Dean of Evenfall.â
âThis is before Dean Kair, she took over after him,â Asha helpfully supplied.
âItâs a very dramatic story, with mystery and intrigue!â Ăsvaldr started, only to be interrupted immediately by Melissa.
âThe Dean went after a girl who had gotten lost and he never returned. The girl that was missing did, however. She said she never saw him.â
âLis! That was my story!â Ăsvaldr pouted, âMove so I can punch your shoulder.â The three, if I can remember correctly, are childhood friends, all born into Everless and magic, which makes this class quite easier for all of them, it would seem.
Jules giggled as she watched the two friends bicker. She wasnât quite fazed by the fact that someone might have passed away or disappeared into the forest.
Or, rather, she was too committed to the idea to give it up just yet. She wasnât going in alone after all.
âWhile the Dean did disappear a few years ago, itâs not necessarily dangerous, other than rumors and apparent scandals,â Asha offered reassuringly. âI wouldnât personally recommend it, though.â
âSo, youâre saying I could?â Jules asked.
âNot exââ
âThanks, Asha!â
Unfortunately, it was at this moment that the professor entered the room.
Jules was not only frequently confident, but also frequently stubborn.
Welcome back! Itâs time for...chapter two, right? Right. Okay, let me find my page again, letâs see.
There was a long silenceâŠ.ah, no thatâs too far ahead. Weâre not ready for that yet, or at least you probably aren't.
Hereâs chapter two! Let me tell you, this chapter is going to be filled with information. Classes and more classes and a few people that I recommend you take a moment to burn into your memory. Not literally though, I should point out. I canât afford another literalism lawsuit. Well, letâs move on. We have a fresh pot of tea and an enthralling chapter to get too!
As entrancing as orientation can be, especially for new students, we, unfortunately, have to cut through all the chatter to focus! Weâll pick up right about here, where the professors smartly split the group into Witches and Nevermore-originating students. Itâs just for ease of communication, Iâm sure you understand, yes? Thereâs such a variety of different material to cover that itâs the only way theyâd be able to get everything done.
We havenât even gotten to the Rings!
Professor Maaya took the group not too far away, leaving Dr. Avali to deal with the Nevermore kids. Maaya, unlike Avali, was endlessly rational, a benefit when it came to describing magic to a few scores of people that hadnât known magic existed until now.
âShall we begin?â She asked with a warm smile. The professor turned to trace out the Five Circles of Magic in the air, illuminating it in Energy-based magic. Ah, you might want to see it, Iâm sure my explanation wasnât the most helpful, huh?
Here, hand me that paper, would you? I have a pen.
There we go! I havenât been drawing this symbol for years to be bad at it. Now you have something to refer to while I keep going.
âThe Five Circles of Magic are the most basic concept that as Witches, you all must understand,â Maaya explained. âThe Fifth Circle is the most common, containing the spheres of Energy, Nature, Voice, Time, and Space. Iâm sure most of you here are attuned to the Fifth Circle. I, myself, am an Energy Witch.â
Ardis and Jules shared a look, one that went âoh, that makes senseâ. Ardis and Jules were both separately mildly relieved to know theyâd have someone at least somewhat similar to them nearby. Aw, thatâs so adorable, isnât it?
As she spoke, the sigil lit up, starting at the very top and moving around in a clockwise pattern. Yes, this order is important, make a note of it.
âThe Fourth Circle of Magic is less common but very important. The Fourth Circle contains the four basic elements, Wind, Fire, Earth, and Water.â The pattern repeated, showing where each one was placed with Wind at the top and Earth at the bottom. âWhile some countries choose to replace one or two of the elements with others which they feel works best, Evenfall has chosen to follow the Western Arcane theory for the Five Circles.â
She nodded to herself, eyeing the group to see if anyone was lost. No one was tired, though that was rather due to her energy spell currently covering the students. Theyâd sleep well tonight, luckily.
âAlright, moving onto the Third Circle of Magic, I hope youâre paying attention!â She clapped her hands together with a brilliant grin. Oh, right, did I forget to mention that Professor Suli Maaya was one of those kinds of people. The type that has a switch to flip and suddenly be a disconcerting vibrant (and mildly aggressive) person. âThe Third Circle contains, from the top, Mind, Soul, and Emotion! This here is a very dangerous circle, as it relates to altering a personâs self but itâs not necessarily something to be feared,â she adds as a reassurance, âAnd Third Circle attunement is quite rare.â
Well, I hope that wasnât too much for you, because we have a little more to go before we can get back into the fun stuff.
âFinally, the Second Circle of Magic, Creation and Destruction. This is the rarest and technically power circle to be a part of.â Professor Maaya scanned the group. Kal squirmed a bit, she was feeling guilty for some odd reason. Itâs good to be unique! I would imagine she knew that but now, but sheâs an odd one. âI want to preface one very important thing before I ask for questions,â Maaya said, âDespite how it may appear, you are all equal in power and strength. The Inner Circles often appear more powerful but are far more difficult to ever truly use. The Outer Circles may seem limited or small but they will provide you with undeniable abilities and skills. At Evenfall, we want everyone to thrive together and work as a group to hone your powers. Strength comes in multiples not singles.â
Oh my, that was quite cheesy. I told her once she should probably change that line, but itâs managed to make an impact every year. Judging by the baited breathes and silence, it worked once again!
âAny questions?â
There was a long silence, people donât figure out things that quickly.
Fortunately, something did break the silence.
âMagic...MAGIC ISNâT REAL!â Someone unknown screamed from the back of the group. Sheâs one of those people I mentioned to remember. Her name is Mira and youâll be hearing that statement and a variety of variations from her quite often. At least it broke the silence, sending the group into a crowd of laughter.
Kal bit her lip, unconfident. Originally, she was inclined to agree with Mira, but now? She was more unsure if she was capable of surviving at a school like this. Which, is absurd. Sheâs a main character! Well, she doesnât know that, but that doesnât make it not true. It looks like weâll have to wait for the character development for the rest.
Someone raised their hand for a question, âWhat about the First Circle of Magic?â
All the energy seemed to drain as a quite deadly serious expression was now on Maayaâs face, âThe First Circle of Magic is dangerous, so I beg you, please, do not look into it.â
âIsnât that...just gonna encourage people to look into it?â Juli whispered quietly. These three were, in fact, the exact type to look into it.
âYou could lose your life by doing so.â
â....Nevermind.â
There was far more to do in terms of âbeginningâ, but it was decided many years ago to place those in the first few days of classes.
All students being required to take their respective Circle Magic class gave a guaranteed spot for students to finish the final steps that would truly allow them to step into the world of Nevermore and Everless.
And allow those scared to run away. Donât tell anyone I said that, I already got in trouble enough about it before, I would rather remain on good terms with the school.
Anyways, by the unfortunate thing called âorganizationâ, all our wonderful students are all in separate classes.
Well, Kal was guaranteed to be separated but Ardis and Jules wound up in separate classes. Quite tragic, really.
Well, whoâs first? Well, we started with Kal first so why not Ardis? Heâs in for some, how would I put it, interesting company.
Ardis was humming lightly, as he tends to do, as he entered his class. He didnât recognize anyone, which makes sense, Ardis you havenât met anyone yet. Though, thatâs probably because heâs in that dorm. A mostly empty place which people rarely actually lived in.
His luck was only evident of his main character status, donât worry. He took a seat near the front of the class, hoping to be left mostly alone. He wanted to learn! Which, well, he hopefully will at Evenfall. Thatâs the point of college, isnât it?
However, as unfortunate is it is for him, there was someone who recognized him.
âHey, is this seat taken?â The voice of an obnoxiously flirtatious voice called out. Ardis glanced to his side, only to see Mary Sue, his suitemate.
âNo?â Ardis answered quite unconfidently. Ardis wasnât sure if he was relieved to see a familiar face or off-put by the girlâs odd behavior. He was fairly certain that getting involved with someone with a weird name like âMary Sueâ wouldnât be a very good idea. Though, let me be honest, heâll be doing far more than she will.
âHey!â Mary Sue hissed, glaring as she looked around. âWho said that?â
âWho said what?â Ardis asked.
âThat, uh,â she stopped. âWhatever it doesnât matter, itâs just part of my fantastic destiny probably.â Oh dear, I think she can hear us. That shouldnât be happening.
Thatâs quite a problem, but it doesnât matter. We donât see that much of her! So we can move onto discussing what happens during class. Personally, the Circle classes are always delightful to teach. Theyâre pass/fail classes and unless you miss all the classes or skip the final, youâll pass. Itâs education on how to use your magic, most students aren't inclined to miss the class.
Mary Sue plopped down with a huff, but caught Ardisâs confused staring.
âIâm sorry, uh, whatever youâre named, Iâm not interested,â she said with a weird smile.
Ardis cocked his head to the side, very innocent, âWhat?â
âIâm not interested in you, so donât even try.â
âI donât know what you mean.â
âI mean that look youâre giving me!â Mary Sue laughed. âYou have something to say, right?â
âI was going to ask if you needed stomach medicine, you had a weird expression,â Ardis said simply. Ah, thatâs what I love about this kid. Blunt and innocent, itâs a very fun combination to see. Especially now that that Mary Sue girlâs eye is twitching. Letâs hope that doesnât become a habit.
âI donât.â
Ardis gave a nod, finally being able to focus on his own stuff again. A delightful set of pens and paper to take notes with. Oh yes, heâs one of those people. He likely spent a few hours debating which of his colorful stationery heâd bring along.
Class began shortly afterward. Professor Zita Cavallo was teaching this class. I hate Professor Zita Cavallo, she owes me for an incident way back in â33. Sheâs a generally nice person, however, which prevents me from telling you to hate her.
Regardless of owed debts, she was teaching this class. Attuned to Space Magic, she was quite the interesting teacher. Â Someone stood beside her, a glamour placed upon them. It seemed to be tied to Professor Cavallo but none of the students here were really talented enough to notice that.
âGood morning students,â Cavallo signed, accompanied by their assistant. âMy name is Zita Cavallo, this person beside is Luna. This is the Introductory Fifth Circle Magic class,â she paused to cast a spell. The fifth circle emerging behind her. âThat includes Energy, Nature, Voice, Time, and Space.â The corresponding points lit up as she signed. âIâm attuned to Space, personally. Thereâs a lot to discuss! So, we need to discuss and work on the assignment of Rings.â
âRings?â Someone called out.
âEvenfall and the surrounding area is unfortunately not very safe. So, in order to protect our students, we have made pacts with ancient entities. These old and wise beings have protected our school and students since the beginning of the schoolâs life. Today, before any classes truly begin, we will be allowing the selection process to occur.â
That got Ardisâs attention. âWhat do you mean, allowing?â He asked, looking at the professor with confusion.
âYou and I do not select your Ring. Their Guardian selects you.â Ah, yes, the stock line every Circle Magic professor uses. I mean, itâs not bad just not creative! âWeâll step outside for a few minutes for the process. It shouldnât take long but weâre organized into times since thereâs quite a few classes to get through and our guardians canât stretch themselves too far trying to help all of us.â
There were murmurs through the class as Cavallo began to lead them out of the room. It was rather unexpected, after all. The Rings, however, are quite interesting and I always find it fun to watch students in their amazement for what goes on.
They filed out onto an open area, where Cavallo ordered them to circle around. She stepped into the center. The first step to the Ring ritual was the origin summoning.
Cavallo was good at this, sheâs done it plenty of times. She stretched out slightly before beginning to cast a very specific spell.
Five circles, well, five rings were illuminated around Cavallo. They burned brightly for a long moment, even despite the sun shining above the students. They soon disappeared and Cavallo grinned. I swear, I hate her cockiness, she did a simple spell, not changing the world. I would know.
âOkay, students. So, the Selection process isnât very glamorous, but thatâs not the point here. This is important, so please listen well.â
Well, weâre not listening to her. I find that Cavalloâs explanations drag on and on and on. Sheâs the through type and we all know that through means boring.
The Five Rings each represent a Guardian. Fye, Brist, Mir, Sair, and Ravere.
Brist, who manifests as an owl, represents wisdom and creativity. Sheâs a sweet person but can be terrifying when upset. I donât recommend making her upset. Mir, who manifests as a deer, represents nature and growth. Theyâre quite a nice being though a bit of boring. Theyâre very reliable.
Sair, who manifests as a fox, represents fire and trickery. He was once considered evil but if you give him pets, he melts. Donât tell him I said that though. Then thereâs Ravere, manifesting as a hawk, she represents wind and passion. Sheâs very strong and appears most frequently to her charges.
Finally, Fye, of ice and courage. A lone wolf, both in personality and form, theyâre very selective in who they pick and rarely show kindness. Theyâre just shy, I think.
Anyways, with that explanation, let us return to the story.
Mary Sue, who had stuck near Ardis for some reason, leaned over. âObviously, Fye will pick me. Iâm the perfect choice!â Ardis nodded half-heartedly, far more curious in the ritual than the girl beside him.
âWeâll begin withâŠâ Cavallo scanned the class. âYou! Come here.â Ardis! Wonderful, this chapter was getting long.
Ardis walked over, curiosity suppressing any of his nervousness.
âSo, quick explanation, youâll stand in the center of where the circles were and with a bit of your own magic energy, the Guardians will appear for just a moment, before one selects you. Quick and simple, your magic carries part of yourself, allowing the Guardians to start to understand you.â
Ardis nodded, âHow do I use my magic energy?â
âAh! I forget, not all of you know. Just take a deep breath, focus on whatever it is you feel within you. Search for that energy and cling to it. Thatâs enough.â
Deciding that was enough of an explanation, mostly because he had been able to do some types of magic beforehand, Ardis figured it wouldnât be hard.
He closed his eyes, trying to shut out the students around him. He could feel it, the energy and the magic that was there.
He jerked, opening his eyes to see the rings once again bright with light and animals in each one.
The Guardians.
There was only a short moment of tense deliberation before one ring, rimmed in orange with a fox at the center was the only one to remain. Sair, the fox of fire and trickery. He had been selected.
The fox seemed to bow before disappearing as well.
Cavallo clapped her hands to grab Ardisâs attention. âGood job! Letâs get to the next person. You?â She pointed at Mary Sue.
The two switched places as Mary Sue flipped her hair. She was confident, very confident.
Ardis was now able to watch the scene that had unfolded for him, yet slightly different. From the outside, you couldnât see any of the Guardians, simply the light of the Rings.
For now, Ardis quietly wondered how Kal and Jules were getting along and what it meant for a being of trickery to select him of all people.
