The whole reason he has this new fit is based on my rabbit hole of a headcannon I have, which would make this ask a VERY long post if I got into its details. I see Vanitas in this headcannon as the incomplete half of Ventus. As long as Ventus lives Vanitas can't truly die. Sora being Sora tries to see the good in Vanitas and its a struggle for Vanitas who only sees himself as darkness.

Down this rabbit hole of the storyline. Ventus and Vanitas come to terms with their shared past and forgive. Vanitas is gifted his own keyblade armor set by Ventus which he wears on his left bicep and the shoes. The armor is more of a symbol of forgiveness than anything because originally, keyblade armor is supposed to help defend against darkness when traversing between different worlds. The shoulder guard and shoes are heavily inspired by the talented @yung-rage who made some keyblade armor designs that you should totally check out.
