Kerkouane, Tunisia

The Punics were a Phoenician people who left their homeland in the Levant and settled around what is now Tunisia and Algeria. They were eventually conquered by the Romans and most of their city centres were largely destroyed in warfare and rebuilt by the Romans with Roman architecture. The ruins of Kerkouane are the only surviving remains of a strictly Punic city since it was never inhabited by the Romans after the Punics abandoned it during the First Punic War (circa 250 BCE).

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC, ancient Kerkouane, Tunisia, contained residences complete with individual bath tubs. The city was destroyed by the Romans in the 3rd century BC and never rebuilt.
