drinking/kissing, slice of life, fluff. 446words ⁺ᵇᵒⁿᵘˢ
There’s a bottle of wine off the table when you get home.
You know from the color of the glass that it’s the sweet kind— the kind Kento goes out of his way to buy because he knows you like how it tastes on evenings like this, with the moon bright in the sky and sticky, summer humidity hanging in the air. It’s perfect, and you’re grateful to be home, where your boyfriend clearly has plans to stay for the rest of the night.
“I’m home!”
“You’re early.”
You turn around to see him coming down the steps. He’s fresh out of the shower, hair towel dried and skin still a little flushed. The inky black of his tshirt and hakama are starkly different from his typical outside attire, drawing all your attention to him the same way it did the first time you saw him dressed down. (The same way it always does, if you’re honest with yourself. You have to resist the urge to ogle him and the way his tshirt clings to his body.)
He closes the distance between you, looking you over as though to make sure you made it back in one piece. “Welcome home…” His fingers are warm around your wrist as he takes it upon himself to slip your watch off and set it next to his on the charger. You offer up your phone, too, relieved to be free of any commitments now that you’re safely home to him.
“Not quite yet.”
He hums, leaning in to kiss your forehead before hugging you to his chest and pressing another kiss to your hair. You take the opportunity to settle your hands on his waist, unable to resist the urge to touch him even as he laughs at you. “Go and get showered.”
There isn’t much room for argument as he pulls away enough to look down at you. The adoration in his gaze causes your face to go hot and you attempt to look away from him, but he stops you by gently tilting your chin up. His smirk is mischievous, but it does nothing to dampen the look in his eye, and the combination pools heat in your stomach. He doesn’t really kiss you; rather, his lips hover over yours and you can taste whiskey on his breath as he gives you a squeeze before stepping out of your way.
“Welcome home, love,” he says, obviously aware that he’s done it right this time. That he’s left you a little dazed and wanting more. He knocks his shoulder into yours, his large hand patting your bum as he passes you. “Go on. Dinner will be ready soon.”
♡ bonus. 1200words. it gets a little emotionally heavy |´∀`●)
Dinner’s light —ahi tuna over summer salad, paired with a sparkling water you both fell for one summer in Italy— and eaten on the balcony, your knees tucked under his as you sit facing him instead of the view you all painstakingly searched for when you decided it was time to move in together. The fan at your back doesn’t do much to relieve the heat that’s yet to burn off but it does add a romantic edge to the night, underlining the old love songs playing from a speaker in the living room.
“Do you remember the first night we spent together?”
You look over your shoulder to see Kento making his way back to you from the kitchen with dessert: a bottle of wine and watermelon, cold and cubed in half the rind. “In my old apartment?”
“Yeah.”
He loads a chopstick with a few pieces of fruit and offers it to you before pouring a double serving of rosé into each glass.
A smile plays in your lips as you properly recall it, remembering the way his fingers felt when they brushed yours and the way the moon reflected in his eyes until he turned to face you instead of Tokyo. You’d only just realized how handsome he was (because of the honest way he smiled into the camera outside your door at the sound of your voice on the other side), all scarred sharp lines and soft brown eyes under his halo of blond hair, and it felt a lot like finding an old sweater you never knew you had.
It was heartwarming and nostalgic and filled you with a comfort you’d deny needing if anyone ever asked. But, everything seemed to shift, as though making sense for the first time, and it’s only ever become clearer and clearer. Even now as you look up at him you can’t help but feel that, in a lot of ways, you’ve never really left that moment.
You’re still on that old balcony, your center of gravity aligning with his. Willing and ready to take the next step. Whichever one he wanted.
Your cheeks are stuffed full of melon when your eyes meet his, and he huffs out a laugh so attractive that you think you might already be a little drunk. Especially as you go on to admit, “I spent the whole evening waiting for you to kiss me. Like, really kiss me.”
It’s tender under his gaze, the fondness in his barely there smile imprinting on you. As though he knows you’re putty under his attention, he takes mercy on you and looks away long enough to put a stopper in the wine bottle. “We got drunk and made out on the couch.”
You laugh, stabbing a larger piece of fruit and offering it to him. “That sounds so funny from your mouth.”
He takes your offering, tucking it into his cheek before asking, “Is that not what happened?” He slides your wine glass closer to you. “We really kissed until you fell asleep.”
“Yeah, but…” Your face is hot as you remember waking up tucked into his side as though it was normal. “That didn’t count.”
He chuckles. “Did it count in the morning?”
It did. He’d kissed you slowly and his mouth tasted like the honey tea you’d brewed while he showered. You’d probably fallen for him then, sitting next to him at your kitchen table.
“Yeah. It did,” you admit, lifting your glass toward him when you realize he’s waiting for you to drink. “What are we celebrating? The weekend?”
“I love you,” he offers, gently tapping his glass into yours.
His gaze moves from your face to your glass before focusing on your mouth as he waits for you to have some. Your face is hot from more than just the summer heat, and you let out a shaky laugh before taking a sip. You follow it with a cold piece of watermelon as he takes a sip of his wine and sets his glass to the side.
“I love you, too.”
He hums his acknowledgment, closing the small space between you and taking your face into his hands. His lips brush yours, only a breath closer than what he’d done earlier, and laughs at the embarrassingly desperate sound that slips from you.
“That’s a good reason, right?” He kisses the corner of your mouth.
He kisses you again, properly this time, and you part your lips eagerly as he fits himself between your legs. His free hand finds one of yours and draws your arm around his waist. He kisses you until you're breathless, tugging you to the edge of your seat —closer to him despite how hot it is. (It isn’t enough, really. Even as you feel sweat down your back, you can’t help but want more.)
“Hmm?”
“Yeah.”
His eyes fall closed when you lift your hand to brush his hair behind his ear. You encourage him closer and press a kiss to the corner of his prosthetic, following a line of scars down his face when he moans at the feeling.
“I wanted to start there. Here,” he admits. “…being your summer boyfriend. Because that was night I realized I wanted to be here with you one day.”
You can’t help the way you smile, all of the butterflies settling in your stomach to give room for something larger than yourself and your silly emotions.
“You looked at me like you really saw me from the moment we met.” He opens his eyes, a smile forming once he realizes you’re grinning at him. “But you smiled at me just like this before you dragged me over to the couch.”
“How can you even remember that?”
“Because people hadn’t seen me since the accident, love. All they saw were the scars. All they see are scars.” He kisses you again. “But that’s not the point. The point is I’d been living in a dark night until I met you. And then you smiled at me like you meant it, and you followed it by falling asleep on my chest…it was the first time I’d felt real in a long time. That I remembered there were still tangible things I wanted out of life.”
You swallow, laughing a little as you wrap both arms around his waist and press your face into his chest. “Ken…”
“Yes, love?”
“This feels different from you just being my summer boyfriend.”
“I already got you once,” he points out, the matter-of-fact tone of his voice offering you false-relief. “The stakes are higher this time.”
“Oh, are they?”
Kento pulls away, kissing your forehead before reaching for his glass and sitting back down. “Haven’t I always given you exactly what you want?” He takes a sip of wine before loading your chopstick up for a second time and holding it out for you to take a bite. “This confession is fair warning, love.”
You feel yourself short circuit when he wipes your mouth and sucks the juice from his thumb into his mouth.
“Warning?”
The sound he makes is off handed, as though you asking is inconsequential. It’s sexier than it should be, causing you to shiver in anticipation, every inch of you hanging on whatever it is he’s going to say next.
“You asked for it.”

2626wc, slice of life fluff. (kissing/romance…should i offer a warning for his mode of transportation? it’s very sexy of him).
You slow to a stop next to Kento, glancing at the ocean before looking back at him. He’s taking in the view, a soft smile on his lips, and you can’t help but stretch to kiss his shoulder as you lean in his direction. “Final destination?”
He looks down at you. “In a hurry?”
“Wha—no?”
“I thought you were an enjoy the journey type of girl, love.”
You look away from him, your face hot as you deal with the side effects of being seen by someone. (Of being teased, too.) “I am. I’m enjoying it. But you’re a destination person.”
“I see,” he murmurs as he looks back out at the ocean. “I see it with you,” he explains, causing your eyes to go wide. “I know where we’re going. And I’m not really in a rush to get there. So, I can enjoy the journey, too…
“Do you remember this spot?”
Your brow furrows as you look around. You’ve escaped to this town with him so many times that they’ve started to blur together. And you’re sure you all have been at this lookout more than a handful of times. You’re just about to tell him that you can’t think of anything special when you realize there was one time—
You laugh. “The time we gave each other the same gift?”
His smile broadens.
“The one that neither of us even liked?”
He pulls off one of his gloves and reaches into his pocket before holding his hand out for you to see. “The very one.”
You peek into his hand to see two thin rings, the same color as the sea glass you all gifted each a few years ago, and can’t help but gasp. “Oh my— oh!”
You frown up at your boyfriend, who closed his fist when you tried to reach for a ring. Kento laughs and you notice that he’s particularly handsome tonight, under the golden hue of an old street lamp. You feel heat pooling in your stomach as you watch him shift rings around in his fist before offering you the larger one.
“Are they really made from those stones?” You turn it over between your fingers, silently wondering if he turned them to rings himself or if he asked Choso to do it.
“Yes,” he divulges. “But, more importantly: This is a covenant.”
The world closes in on you, making you feel as though all there is is this moment: the ocean below, waves crashing along the beach as he offers you a promise —a covenant— and as you look up at him you can’t really make sense of beyond the fact that you’d agree to anything.
He mirrors you, holding up the smaller ring and offering you a look that draws butterflies to your stomach. “If anyone asks,” he explains, voice low and measured, “I’m your boyfriend until the end of the summer.”
“Oh?” You tease. “If anyone asks? And if they don’t?”
“They will.”
“I’m loving the confidence.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“I love you,” he counters, smug amusement on his face, and it’s too attractive. Terribly attractive, if you’re honest.
“Play fair, Nanami Kento.”
“Hold it until we get the water.” He leans closer and presses a kiss to your forehead. You watch as he settles the smaller ring in his palm before he slips his glove back on. “Think about how much you love me, too.”
Before you can say anything, he winks at you and pushes off on his longboard, causing you to laugh in disbelief before slipping the ring on your thumb and peddling after him.
It only takes about five more minutes to get to the beach, and it’s five minutes you enjoy as you watch him skate, the air whipping at his linen shirt as lithe muscle supports every shift of his body. He’s careful to never get too far ahead of you, even as he indulges in taking some of the curves of the hill a little too recklessly for your liking; and, every time one of his hands grazes the ground to support, he flashes you a smile that tells you he knows you find him really hot whenever he does it.
Once you get there, Kento shoulders the backpack from the basket before you let your bike fall into the sand next to his board. You kick your shoes off next to his and look out over the water as he pockets his gloves and cuffs his pant legs. He wordlessly offers you his hand before leading you to walk along the shoreline.
“A covenant, huh?”
He hums, lifting your joined hands and kissing the ring on your right hand. “I already made you a promise,” he reminds you, voice gentle over the waves. There’s a hint of humor as he goes on to say, “But, your request…this is very serious, my love. No take backs.”
You smile to yourself. “No take backs?”
“If you tell someone I’m something other than your summer boyfriend, I’ll be really upset.”
Your eyes meet his and he cracks a smile, slowing to a stop as you say, “You’re awfully cute this evening.”
You can’t be certain in the dark, but you're pretty sure the tops of his ears turn pink. “I watched you secretly pet that cat in the alley while I got you a snowcone” —your face once again goes hot— “the one I told you not to pet, remember?”
“No.”
“I heard you tell it that you’d be in trouble if you were caught,” he deadpans as you giggle. “And then watched as you pulled out one of those lickable treats.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I have photo evidence,” he admits, the matter-of-fact tone of his voice making the whole conversation even more amusing. “Video evidence, actually.”
“…I might have an idea…”
He huffs out a laugh, turning and pulling you into his chest. As you both look out over the sea, he goes on to say, “It was cute. It reminded me that I’m in love with you.”
You laugh nervously and he squeezes you a little tighter.
“Hear me out,” he murmurs. “The cat looked sickly. I didn’t want you to pet it. But, while I was watching you, I realized that there wasn’t much difference between me and the cat—”
“Oh. That’s good. Because I named him Nya~nami.”
The silence that settles between you is deafening, but you eventually feel him shift to rest his forehead on your shoulder before asking, “Did you really?”
“He was blue with gold eyes! How couldn’t I? I invited him home but he didn’t seem too interested…”
He sighs. “I suppose he and I are quite different, then.” When you turn to look at him he reaches for your left hand and plays with the ring on your thumb. “Perhaps he’s a stronger man if he can say no to you.”
You start to laugh in full, the sound clearly startling him before he smiles too, obviously very pleased with himself. Once you’ve settled down, you ask, “You want to deny me something?”
“I’d give you the moon if you asked for it.”
(You’re certain you already have it.)
“I can’t believe a cat made you feel so mushy…anyway he was a nice boy. Just hungry, I think. Maybe got into one too many fights recently.”
“People probably told you to leave me alone, too.”
Oh. It isn’t a parallel you’d drawn as you coddled the cat for a few minutes, but the fact that your stoic boyfriend had seen himself in a stray causes you to realize that he has feelings towards your relationship that you’ve never considered.
He sighs and meets your gaze. “We can go try to find it. If you want. Tomorrow.”
“Oh, you love-love me, huh?”
He just hums and takes hold of your free hand, too. “I do. I appreciate the effort you’ve put into this. Into me. More than I could explain in words. And—”
He sighs. “This isn’t what I planned to say at all, love.”
“I like hearing it.”
“I know.” He swallows thickly and the glimpse of nerves is surprising to you.
“Ken—”
“I wasn’t sure of my purpose anymore, after the accident. I am physically incapable of doing the one thing I’d found valuable. Saw my worth in. It’s…difficult. To stomach that truth.
“And yet, I can only accept that I’m grateful for the hardship. The suffering, really,—” he smiles when you laugh, his gaze searching your face as though to memorize the moment “—because it’s shaped me into this…into this man.
“Someone who is not only willing, but ready to grow. To look at life from both sides…I could not have both. I knew that superficially. But knowing it now is different, because I understand that my worth isn’t measured by what I can do for the world. It’s about what I can do for my world.”
“Kento.”
“Hmm?”
Your heart is in your throat. He’s never put any of this into so many words and you have no idea how you’re supposed to take it at 4am on an old beach. When it’s just the two of you and paradise at your feet. With the moon and ocean as your only witnesses.
“You’re a life worth lived, Yn.”
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing unexpected. I looked at these stones sitting in the office and realized I couldn’t remember which belonged to me and which one belonged to you. It didn’t matter. Doesn’t matter. I…need you to know this.”
“Know what?”
Your heart is in your throat and your head is in the clouds. You aren’t sure if your feet are still in the sand but your hands are certainly in his. They’re real and warm and reassuring.
“I just need you to know I found myself —who I was meant to be— here, on this journey with you. There’s no place I’d rather be…” He lets go of your right hand, gaze meeting yours as he prepares to slip the ring he held on to onto your pinky. Mischief glints in his expression briefly, before he goes on to say, “And, I, a devoted boyfriend, hope you, a loving girlfriend, feel the same.”
You’re trembling. You know it, he knows. He even squeezes your hand after to help steady and assure you. “You know I feel the same.”
He grins. “Could you say it again?”
He starts to play with the ring on your finger, as though making sure it’s there despite the fact that he slid it on himself. You have to catch his fingers in yours to help yourself think straight, and the patience that flows from him weighs heavier on you.
Because what is he doing?! Everything he’s said feels as though they should be part of vows, not thrown into him fulfilling your whimsical ideas. And just underlines the fact that every moment with him has always felt like a dream. Or like it was written well in advance of meeting in a hospital elevator.
You gasp when you feel his finger brush your cheek, the healed texture of his skin smooth over yours.
“Why are you crying, love?”
“Because what’s happening?”
“I’m making us official. I’m not sure what you’re doing.”
He sounds so much like you that it’s startling for a moment, and you can’t help but laugh. You reach up to settle your hand over his where he’s cradling your face, the ghost of a smile on his lips causing your words to start to free fall.
“I’m glad you didn’t give up after your accident. I’m glad this world shaped me into the person you needed most when we met. I want to keep waking up everyday and deciding that this is worth it.
“And I love the way you make me want more for myself, so that I can be better for you, and for us.” You stroke your thumb across the back of his hand and he brushes away some more tears. “You have no idea how proud I am of you, how relieved I am, honestly, that you allowed this to exist between us…
“Ah, babe. What are you doing to me, right now? I thought we were just going for a ride. And instead I’m on an emotional high because... You even made these rings from a gift neither of us even liked. It’s— yeah. I, a loving girlfriend, feel the same as you, a devoted boyfriend. Thank you for thinking of and prioritizing me.
“If you’re a stray, so am I…which…lucky me, if we are. It means I can stick with you and we can go wherever.” You gently pull his hand away from your face, changing your hold in order to affectionately rub his scarred knuckles to your cheek. “I feel like we’re reciting vows.”
“Please don’t refer to either of us as strays, when the time comes. Some people would never let us hear the end of it.” Kento smiles and pinches your cheek. “And, this is a covenant, love.”
Laughing, you let go of his hand and take his ring off your finger. “Right. With that in mind…” You kiss it, feeling your face go hot when he realizes how focused he is on you. “Kento. I love you. This journey we’re on together —whatever power brought us here— I will always value and prioritize it. You. Us.”
You reach for his unharmed hand and cradle it in yours. “May I?”
“Mm. I need you to.”
“Ha— what?”
He leans closer, forcing eye contact. “I need you to take responsibility for me.”
You swallow, butterflies filling your stomach distractingly. It takes a second, but you slip the ring onto his pinky. “These feelings are much stronger than I expected.”
“Should I tone it down?”
You stroke your thumb over his rings, lingering over the band on his middle finger (the one that represents his promise to get to this point with you…beyond this point, really). “No. I’ll take whatever you give me with grace.”
“Good thing I love you.”
“That’s what I’m saying.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
He pulls you into a hug, rubbing your back soothingly as your arms circle his waist. He’s warm and solid, perfectly comforting as he holds you as close as possible. The moment feels indulgent, which makes you want more.
“Babe?”
He hums, weighing a little heavier into you as he continues to rub your back.
“I think you should kiss me.”
He chuckles, lingering a few seconds longer before pulling away enough to look at you. Your eyes fall closed as he leans back in, and he surprises you by kissing your forehead. He follows it by brushing the tip of his nose yours ahead of tilting his head to kiss your lips.
“Actually, I really was just taking you on a ride. To watch the sunrise.”
You laugh, shaking your head as you pull away from him and sit down in the sand. “Ok.”
Kento blinks down at you, mouth curling amusedly when you pat the space next to you. As you hug your legs to your chest, you go on to say, “Com’mon. We’ve nearly missed it because you have me out here…covenanting. As though you aren’t already the only one I see.”
He squats down, head tilting to catch your gaze. “What was that?”
Your face is still hot and the butterflies still have ownership of your stomach, and even if you can’t help but melt under his attention, you focus all of yours on him. “Should I s-say it again?”
He surprises you by shaking his head, but you know him well enough to see the playful edge behind his phlegmatism. “I think you should kiss me.”

also! this series was supposed to be posted last summer, but…idk what happened. it worked out well tho, because it was inspired by the lyrics above, from the song i’ll haunt you by tennis and they’re currently on their “last tour for a very long time” so i’ve been re-listening to all the albums. attending the show inspired me to pick this back up because their vibe is just…romance is real bc i feel it and here you can too, and i love that for nanami
You look up from your iPad, eyes landing curiously on Nanami. He’s still in his tshirt –a plain, white silk-cotton blend you usually steal before he has a chance to slip it on in the morning– and his hair is still messy (proof that you all have done a grand total of nothing all morning). But, the sun is streaming through the balcony curtains and you can’t help the feeling that blooms in your stomach. (Soft and warm as it unfurls through every inch of you.)
“Ken…”
He hums his reply, not bothering to look up from the recipe book he picked up while you all were out a few days ago. It allows you a little longer to admire him, your eyes focused as he shifts his weight and leans a little more heavily into the counter. He has the pad of his thumb tucked between his teeth in thought as he drags his middle finger down the length of the page in review of the index. It takes a second or two more of silence for him to say, “I’m listening, love.”
“I have a question.”
“And I have an answer,” he thumbs through the pages and taps the one he’s looking for in victory before looking up at you with a pleased expression. “Hopefully, at least.”
You shift in your seat, leaning a little closer to him. “Do you, uh– do you want to be my boyfriend this summer?”
He blinks at you. “I’m already your boyfriend, Yn. Last I checked…”
“No, you are.” You spin your pen between your fingers before you let it snap to the side of your case and push the device aside. “But, you know… do you want to be, like, my boyfriend for the summer?”
“Different from what I’ve been thus far…” He tilts his head curiously. “I see. Ok...”
You laugh in surprise. “Really? That easy?”
“Do you want to fight about it?”
“Course not.” Your eyes fall briefly to where his fingers drum along the book page. “But, I just want to make sure you, um…” It feels so silly to even say -to do-, but his gaze is equally interested and amused as he waits for you to finish. “Do you know what I mean?”
“I’ll court you properly,” he nods, causing you to laugh a little over his choice of words. “Like I’m winning you over again.” He smirks at what you're certain is your face lighting up with excitement. “I’m looking forward to it, honey.”

wc1017. it’s syrupy sticky sweet fluff. but it’s a hard fought realization, too, so there’s a slight edge to it. a confession, slight teasing, and a kiss.
“Everything ok?”
You sigh, barely moving from your still-as-stone position at the table. For a moment you consider what you may look like –elbows propped on the table and hands pressed to your eyes, a blanket falling off your shoulders–, and you consider laughing about it before deciding better of it. For as dramatic as it all is.
“Yeah.” Your voice comes out softer than intended. “You’re early.”
Nanami hums, carefully adjusting your blanket before quietly pulling up a seat next to you. You can feel his gaze on you and easily picture the way his brow creases in your mind’s eye, his concern for you utterly devastating. The fact that you can’t actually see him plays in your favor, given the circumstance.
“Imagine my surprise.” He leans in closer to you, the length of his arm fitting along your elbows before admitting, “I wanted to see you.” His leg presses into yours under the table. “Is that ok?”
“Is this?”
There’s a smirk in his voice as he says, “Of course.”
“Same.”
“Are you sure?” There’s an equally teasing and concerned tone in his voice. “You haven’t looked at me.”
“You’re too handsome. You’ll make my head hurt…more…You’ll make it hurt more.”
“Migraine?”
“No. “
“Regular pain?”
“No.”
“You’ve got to give me something, bub.”
The little sound that slips from you at the nickname is wholly embarrassing. “Really wanna know?”
“Yes.”
“It might upset you.”
He’s quiet for a moment before murmuring, “Tell me.”
“I’m in love.”
“I see.” His concern shifts to amusement. You feel it as though it’s tangible. “Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
“That’s quite the affliction.”
“Tell me about it,” you sigh. “It’s taking a lot out of me.”
“Quite burdensome, too,” he contemplatively adds.
“…yeah.”
His voice is low and teasing as he goes on to say, “And it’s catching,” as though it’s a secret. “I, um…I might have given it to you. Sorry.”
You smile, hands sliding over your hair as your head falls forward to lay on the table. “I knew it.”
He laughs, leg weighing a little heavier into yours. “Yn. Look at me.”
You do, straightening to your full height and feeling oddly relieved when you lay eyes on him. It’s been the case for a while now, but it feels a little different now. As though accepting that you're in love with him has made something easier.
“I’m not actually sorry.”
“I wouldn’t expect you to.”
He drops your gaze, a small smile on his lips. “That took awhile for you, huh? To come to terms with?” He offers you his hand, palm up, and his fingers curl around yours seemingly before your hand even touches his. His eye meets yours again, perfectly clear and honest. “…It’s been awhile for me. I didn’t want to burden you with it before you were ready.”
“Why do you call it a burden?”
“Because I know you.” His lips brush over your knuckles.
“It isn’t the right word.”
He hums thoughtfully before saying, “Overwhelm.”
“Yeah…I’ve loved you for a long time.”
“I know.” His thumb strokes the back of your hand tenderly. “I felt it.”
“Oh…” Your chest goes hot. Limbs tingly. Your stomach feels full and sated, brain quiet for the first time in a long time. “I feel relieved.”
“Me, too…don’t look at me like that. You’ve been making yourself sick over it…the idea of having to explain to my loving girlfriend that she was physically ill because of her love for me is not ideal.”
“That’s…fair. I probably would have taken it well. I think. Because I trust you. I love you.”
“Good to know,” he tells you, a soft smile on his lips. “I love you, too. I’m in love with you, too.”
Your fingers tighten around his. “Thank you, Ken. For being patient with me.”
“It’s easy.” He gives your hand one more squeeze before getting up and stretching. “Are you spending the night?”
“Yeah.”
“Good,” he pulls his phone and wallet from his pocket, seeing the latter on the table. “You’re nice to come home to.”
You watch as he scrolls his phone, distractedly admitting, “I was at home when we spoke…you weren’t there.”
He pauses, looking over but not quite at you with a curious expression on his face. As you realize what a silly thing it was to say (of course he wasn’t at your apartment, he’d been just about to board a flight back from his ‘boys weekend’ when you spoke a few hours ago), he doesn’t ask what you mean. His silence would be fever inducing if you hadn’t spent the last few days accepting the fact that you’re in love with the man. That you have been for longer than you can really fathom.
He doesn’t ask, you go on to realize, because he already knows: you just wanted to be close to him. Closer to him.
“I was thinking Thai,” he tells you. “You want your usual?”
“Yeah…but, um…Can I have a hug? And a kiss?”
His cheeks flush, incredibly endearingly, and you swear your heart skips a beat. “You needn’t ask…”
Nanami sets his phone down before he comes to stand in front of you, holding his hand out for you to take. He guides your arms around his waist as you stand up, his other hand coming up to cradle the back of your head as he hugs you to his chest. The contented sigh that he lets out is just as comforting as his arms around you.
He lets you go after indulging you, hand moving to cup your cheek. His eye is already on your lips, but he strokes his thumb tenderly across your cheek as though savoring the moment before he leans in. You tilt your chin to meet him, but he doesn’t kiss you. Instead he meets your gaze briefly with a small, cheeky smile playing on his lips.
“Yn.” His breath is warm and sweet. You grip his shirt in an attempt to ground yourself as your head positively swims. “Welcome home.”

“My love.”
Nanami noses at the back of your neck, one hand squeezing your hip as the other flexes where it’s trapped under you. It’s an attempt to wake you up, but it’s a weak one and feels wonderfully phantom in your mostly-still-asleep state.
“You’ve silenced your alarms three times already,” he goes on to say. It pulls a groan from you, leaving him laughing as you turn over and snuggle into his chest instead of making any attempt to get up. “C’mon,” he murmurs, but the way he presses a kiss to your hairline and curls the arm under you to hug you closer belays any attempt to get you out of bed. “You’ll have to take the crowded train in otherwise.”
“Kento.”
“Hmm?”
“Why are you threatening me?” He laughs again, offering you another kiss -this time to your forehead- as you go on to say, “Don’t kiss me. ‘m being so serious…so early n’ I thought you loved me.”
“I love you,” he agrees, rubbing your waist for a few seconds before finally patting your bum. It’s a wordless warning, one that tells you you really are at risk of missing your preferred train, and it leaves you groaning as you roll away from him to flop helplessly onto your side of the bed. “I’ll make you something special to prove it,” he promises.
“‘m up, ‘m up,” you tell him, ignoring the way he laughs as you continue your lazy come-to. Your alarm goes off again and instead of using your watch, you will yourself to sit up and swing your legs over the edge of your bed to grab your phone off the charger. “n’ I’m sorry for sleeping through my alarms.”
He follows you, kissing your shoulder before he sits up beside you. “No problem,” he admits. “You know that, my love. But-”
“Please, no buts. You know I can’t handle it.”
He laughs as he fits his hands to the small of your back and pushes you up. “I told you not to drink coffee so late. You tossed and turned all night.”
“It was decaf.”
“I think you used that silly little line last night, too. I thought you loved me. I do,” he nags, both teasingly and endearingly as you all make your way towards the bathroom. “That’s why I told you not to drink it.”
“What ever happened to good morning?”
He laughs, head tilting back as the sound thrums through you. It wakes you up completely, drawing a smile to your face as you push past him to use the toilet.
“Good morning, Yn. How did you sleep, my love?” You ask as you shut the door behind you.
He continues to laugh as you answer yourself, the sound of his amusement slowly fading as you assume he heads to the kitchen. It’s annoying only because he’s right: You’re certain you’d even said drinking the coffee was a problem for tomorrow you; and, your face goes hot as you remember what your boyfriend had said in return, the gentle you should be a little kinder to her reminding you that he always has your best interest in mind.
“Good morning, Yn,” he tells you as you join him at the sink a few minutes later. “How did you sleep, my love?”
“Just fine,” you insist as you wash your hands. “How about you, Ken?”
“My girlfriend tossed and turned all night.” He lines your toothbrush with toothpaste for you, carefully handing it over once you’re ready. “But, I can’t complain.”
“Sucker.”
He hums his agreement as he slips in to use the toilet, and you stare at your toothbrush for a moment before bringing it up to your mouth and giving your teeth one good scrub. You reach for his toothbrush as you tuck your own into your cheek, wetting it before using his preferred toothpaste to line the brush.
You’re back to brushing your teeth by the time he rejoins you, yawning sleepily and rubbing his face with the back of his hand.
“It is unfortunate that you have to go into the office today,” he admits as he washes his hands and clips his hair away from his face. You watch him carefully, squinting to see he’s pleasantly surprised when you offer him his toothbrush.
It’s rare that the pair of you actually have the opportunity to get ready together like this, so you don’t completely mind having to go in -especially since you know he’ll be waiting at home for you once you get off-, the same way you don’t mind him getting you out of bed.
“It’s ok,” you eventually tell him, as you're both wrapping up your skin care. “Having to go in. We don’t do this together often.”
“Maybe I should get a job,” he deadpans as you slip your glasses on.
Your eyes meet his in the mirror, a blank expression on your face, and he cracks a smile first.
“Yeah, I don’t know why I said that.” He admits, leaning in to kiss your shoulder before steering you out of the bathroom. “You need to be walking out the door in 10 minutes.”
“That isn’t even enough time to breathe,” you complain. “Let alone question my own life choices.”
“They’re perfect,” he tells you, arm slinking over your shoulders before his fingers brush your jaw. He’s focused on your lips when you look up at him, his minty breath already on your tongue. “Led you to me, after all.”
He kisses you then, lips soft and sweet, but he’s gone before you can even consider kissing back, already turning away with a warning that you’re down to eight minutes.
You hurry through the rest of your routine, tugging on work-appropriate pants and one of his sweaters before standing in front of the bedroom mirror to decide on your hair. You’re a little fuzzy-brained from his comments, a smile remaining on your lips as words play over in your head.
“Is your bag packed?” Nanami asks as he rejoins you in the bedroom.
Your face is still hot, and you find yourself unable to look at him as you say, “Yeah. I did it last night.
“You should go back to sleep, you know? No need for us to both be up suffer- ah. Wait. Yuji told me this one before.”
“The anticipation is chilling,” he tells you from the closet.
“Where moderate effort is appropriate, moderate effort will do,” you say, mocking his voice. “Or something like that, I dunno. It means go back to bed.”
“You're not a full time job,” he murmurs, offering you yet another kiss as he slips back by you.
“What am I then? A lifestyle?”
He laughs as he leaves the room. “Yes, my love. And I’m all in, always.”
You’re still smiling as you finish up, checking your watch to see you have a few minutes to spare. “You couldn’t have been that disturbed by me,” you tell him as you make your way to the door. “Last night, I mean. You’re so jovial this morning.”
“Gross.”
You laugh, shaking your head as you bundle up for your commute. “It’s sweet. You’ve totally made my morning, my love.”
He joins you in the genkan, chuckling when you look over at him in surprise. “Lunch,” he says as he holds up a little bag. “And, this is also yours.”
You accept the tumbler, popping the lid and breathing in the familiar scent. “You made me miso soup?”
“Surprise,” he tells you, voice flat as he fits your bento into your backpack. “Exactly what you wanted for breakfast.”
You laugh, looking him over to see that he’s dressed similarly to you. But, it’s only once he begins to put on his scarf and coat that you realize he’s planning to leave with you. “Where are you going?”
“Walking you to the station.” He slips his feet into his Docs and pulls your backpack over his shoulders. “Phone, wallet, keys?”
“…yeah.”
Nanami offers you yet another kiss, this time to your forehead as he asks, “Exit buddy?” He’s offering you one of his hands as he unlocks the door, glancing at you expectantly when you don’t immediately take it. “Yn?”
“It isn’t my birthday” -he laughs, taking your hand for himself and leading you out of the apartment- “not our anniversary, either. Why are you being so…lovey-dovey?”
“I enjoy waking up next to you. It felt…particularly good this morning.”
“You want me to move in so bad,” you tease. “If you asked, I’d say yes.”
He’s quiet as you all ride the elevator down, his thumb brushing fondly back and forth over your knuckles, but it isn’t until you’re halfway to the station that he finally says, “I need to get a few more things in order.”
“What?”
“I do want us to live together,” he explains. “And there will never be a perfect time to do it, but if I can just take care of a few more things, I’ll be ready.”
“Oh.” You smile to yourself, hugging your tumbler to your chest as warmth sweeps through you. “It’s nice to be in love.”
Nanami chuckles, squeezing your hand affectionately as silence falls comfortably between you all. You want to slow down, to stretch the time with him a little further, but you can only walk but so slowly.
“Thank you for walking me to the station,” you say as you stop short at the corner. “You didn’t have to…”
“I wanted to,” he tells you, letting go of your hand to pull you into a hug that surprises you. He kisses your forehead with a soft sigh, smiling softly when you look up at him. “I live far from your office.”
“It’s just 20 more minutes.”
“More than double your usual commute,” he reminds you as you all cross the street. “Not to mention- why are you walking so slow? Do you want to take the crowded train in?”
“I…just want a little longer with you.”
He smiled to himself. “Good thing I was planning to ride in with you.”
“What!”
“I’ll explain,” he tells you. “But let’s walk a little faster. And drink up, you won’t be able to on the train.”
“You don’t need to ride the train for me.”
“I want to.”
You take a few more sips, mulling over his desire to ride in with you. “Have some,” you encourage him once you’re outside of the station. “I insist.”
He does, capping it and tucking it into a side pocket on your backpack as you slip your mask on. As he does the same you find yourself admiring the way his dark mask and eyepatch combo make him appear partially striking under the rising sun. It causes an embarrassing amount of butterflies in your stomach considering how long you all have dated.
“Ready?” He offers you his hand again, the corner of his eye crinkling in a smile when you accept it and hug him closer.
“Yes. Start explaining.”
“I just want a few minutes longer with you, too. And taking you to work is easy. Normal…”
“Uh huh. And?”
“And I had a bad dream last night,” he admits. “I wish I could stay next to you all day, but you have a life to live. So, I’ll just do what I can to stay by your side as long as possible.”
It’s sickeningly sweet and leaves your insides absolutely liquified. You’re grateful you don’t turn into a puddle on the station floor as you all breeze through the turnstiles and to the right platform. But, the most important part for you was his admission, and you can’t help the way you pull him in a little closer once you’re standing still.
“I’ll call out.”
“Don’t be silly. It’s rare that you’re in.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
He shakes his head. “I’ll survive.”
“I want you to do more than just survive next to me.”
The corner of his eye crinkles in a smile. “Romantic, my love. If this was a movie you’d be pulling me in for a kiss.”
“If it wasn’t rush hour I most certainly would.”
“I’ll look forward to it later, then…don’t look like that, hmm? I’m ok. I just…you can call out tomorrow.”
You nod, slowly, hesitating only a moment before taking a chance and wrapping your arms around his waist. He lets you press yourself flush against him, his own arms drawing warm and firm around your shoulders as he rests his check on your head. “Ok. I love you,” you admit, feeling him quite literally deflate. It causes you to squeeze him a little tighter. “I trust you.”
“I dreamt that the accident never happened.”
You can’t grip his coat, but your fingers dig into it in an attempt to ground him. To ease the weight of his admittance, even if you don’t quite understand it. “Oh,” you hear yourself say. “And that was a bad dream?”
“I’d have still met you,” he decides. “I don’t doubt that. But we wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t have allowed it.” He pulls away enough to meet your gaze as the train pulls into the station. “So, yes. It was a bad dream.”
“Kento-”
He takes your hand, giving a small shake of his head in a wordless request for you not to say anything more. You accept it, swallowing the lump in your throat as he leads you onto the train. There aren’t too many people on it, but there are enough that would make it a little uncomfortable to sit and talk together. It leaves you feeling a little disappointed until he pulls you away from the seats. He leans against a wall, his thumb smoothing over your knuckles before he pulls you into him, his arms holding you securely once you’re settled.
The train is quiet enough, allowing you to hear and feel each of his breaths. Allowing it to sooth you before you wiggle around in his hold enough to unzip his jacket and fit yourself closer to him. He laughs at the action, low and breathy, and it’s far more than he’s ever allowed in front of so many so you know he isn’t telling you everything. Or perhaps he is and you just can’t understand the weight of his emotions because you can’t comprehend how not going through a traumatic, near death experience constitutes a bad dream.
“Kento?”
“Hmmm?”
“We should get off at the next stop.” Your suggestion is quiet and a little nerve-riddled. But, just because you can’t understand doesn’t mean you can’t be sympathetic towards the fact that it affected him enough to go so far as to ride in just to have a few more minutes with you. Especially since you know he doesn’t care much for the train to begin with. “We can go back home.”
He sighs. “I’ll be fine…I could use a little time to sort myself out,” he admits. “It’s a funny thing.”
“What? Having a bad dream?”
“Perspective.”
“Are you going to say something else romantic? I don’t know if I can handle it.”
“Is that right?”
“I’ll get heartburn and a tummy ache and we’ll have to go home anyway.” You smile as he laughs, enjoying the way you feel it in your chest, too. “Or my head will go all fuzzy and I’ll be twitterpated* all day.”
“Twitterpated*?” He asks. “What does that even mean?”
“Helplessly distracted by love. I think. It’s from Bambi.”
“I see,” he murmurs. And then, after your eyes have unknowingly fallen closed for a few minutes, he hums softly and says, “I understand.”
“Ah jeez,” you sleepily laugh. There are more people now, forcing you to talk just a little louder, but he doesn’t make any move to end the uncharacteristic moment of PDA, so you don’t either. “Now you’ve done it.”
“Good,” he counters. “Be twitterpated all day. It’s better than being sleepy and sluggish.”
You smile, deciding to allow yourself to be sidetracked from your earlier conversation. “Don’t tell me you’re back on this restless night thing.”
“I am. Because you’re falling asleep on me on the train.”
You laugh, a little louder than you mean to, causing him to squeeze you a little tighter. “That’s because you’re nice and warm. You smell like home. I’m all full of soup you so loving made and packed. These are perfect conditions.”
“Mmhmm,” he sighs, rubbing at your back. “You can close your eyes again. I’ll wake you up before your stop.”
“Yeah, right,” you laugh. “I’m not leaving you alone on the train, my love.”
His chest gives a little, causing you to pull away enough to look at him. He’s hard to read on the best of days, but in his mask and patch it’s even harder to tell just how he’s reacting to your words until he finally says, “I can feel your heart beating.”
You blink up at him, not quite sure what he means, and you know he knows you too well because he laughs in amused disbelief before saying, “I can feel your heart beating…so I know I’m not alone, my love.”
“Oh my god,” you hear yourself say, face going hot under his tender gaze. “Ok. Let’s stop talking.”
He laughs, pulling you back into him with an arm around your shoulders while his other hand finds yours. “Whatever you want.”

“Were you working?”
You close your laptop, moving your little set up to the coffee table as you sit back down. When your boyfriend makes no immediate effort to join you, you pat the spot next to you in encouragement. Your eyes track him as he hesitates before sitting down, kicking his legs up on the L of your couch while you tuck your legs under yourself and draw an arm over the back.
“Not really,” you tell him, surprised by his morose demeanor. “Well- kind of.”
“I should have called…shouldn’t have come-”
You reach for him, remembering that he mentioned having to change his medication late last week as your palm covers the back of his hand. “I didn’t ask, because I didn’t want to overstep your boundaries,” you say, lacing your fingers through his and rubbing his thumb with yours.
His mental heath is something you usually give him space on, but you’d noticed the change in his behavior a few days before he brought up not feeling well and you realized you couldn’t let him suffer like that. You’d gently encouraged him to go to the doctor, but he hadn’t mentioned it again so you hadn’t either.
He hums in acknowledgment, laying his head back on the couch and looking at you. “She upped my medication. I did not feel good about admitting it.”
You nod understandingly, happy to hear that he’d gotten what he needed. But, you know that the feelings always worsen before they get better, and you feel an incredible amount of love well up inside you over him coming to you.
“I’m here for you, Kento. We don’t have to talk about it- I’m okay to sit in silence with you. I’m just happy you know I can bear your weight on my shoulders…I’ve been working really hard to be able to.”
He smiles at you, acknowledgement clear in his gaze. “I know. I’m proud of you.”
Your face heats up, and you shift slightly, just enough to comfortably rest your head on his shoulder. “I’m proud of you, too. I don’t think I’ve ever told you that…you got a shit hand and I think you’re playing it wonderfully. And needing your medication changed is not something to feel bad about.
“I’m not saying you have to tell me, or making any unreasonable demands, but you tell me to rely on you, that I don’t have to be strong all the time. So, I…I want you to know it goes both ways. It's ok to be vulnerable with me.”
“That’s why I’m here.”
You sit up, eyes wide, and you can’t help but ask, “For my protection?”
He laughs, thumb trapping yours under his. “Yes. For a little while at least.”
You study his face before leaning in and pressing a kiss to his forehead. His face goes red, but you ignore it in favor of saying, “You have it, Ken. Forever…or however long you need it.”
He nods, opening his arm to you, and you cuddle into him, your legs stretching out next to his.
“I love you,” he tells you, and you wrap your arms around his waist in response, squeezing him closer as you all sit in silence.
The night stretches out ahead of you for what feels like forever until he finally, surprisingly, asks, “Can I stay here tonight?”
You sit up, letting go of his hand as you smile softly at him. “Of course, my love,” you say, thumb brushing just under his eye fondly. “You know you don’t have to ask. My home is yours.”
His eye searches your face for a moment, and you watch as his chin tilts just barely in a wordless request for a kiss. You lean in, brushing your lips to his before tilting your head to press kisses to his face. He chuckles, the sound deep and exhausted as he curls his arm around your waist and pulls you flush against him in a hug.
“Thank you,” he murmurs into the curve of your neck, and you know it’s more than just for this because it’s the same thank you you give him whenever he saves you from yourself.
“You’re welcome,” you say as you pull away to look at him. Quietly, you add, “I know when I feel overwhelmed by things outside of my control, or…or like I’m about to drown, I…I just want someone to hold my hand.”
“I know,” he says. “That’s why I came, actually.” He swallows thickly, reaching up to tug his eye patch off, and it’s an inappropriate time to tell him, but it’s an oddly attractive action. One he’s never done so carelessly in front of you.
“I’m still learning this,” he starts to gesture between the two of you before laughing dryly. “All of it, really. Shibuya uprooted my entire world and you changed my life” -his eyes close for a moment and you take the time to brush his hair back into place- “I’m still learning.
“So, I came for your protection, yes,” he teases. “But mostly because I remembered that you like to be held when you're down. And that you aren’t shy about it.”
“I know you haven’t had the opportunity to feel the weight of your arms around you, but I have, and there’s no weighted blanket that I can even pretend to compare.”
You poke his cheek, knowing he likes to take you out for walks or car rides when you’re stressed. But, you can’t drive; and, you know he isn’t interested in going out for a walk in the rain. “Want me to take you up to the roof? We can watch it rain.”
“No…I just want to be here. Close to you.”
You smile softly, taking his hand and pulling him up. “Thank you for trusting me.”
He hugs you again, breathing in the scent of your hair. “Thank you for noticing. Last week.”
“Ah- don’t mention it. I know my Ken and he might be a Mr. Grumpy Gills but he’s isn’t a meanie.”
He laughs, shaking his head as you pull him toward the kitchen.
“Let’s share a glass of bubbly in the bath and snuggle in bed.”
“Sweetheart, my medication-”
“I know, I know.”
You let go of his hand long enough to quickly open the fridge and pull out a bottle of sparkling cider. Showing it to him proudly, you watch as a smile tugs at his lips, the gloominess around him lifting for a moment.
“Yn,” he huffs out, obviously suppressing a laugh.
what can i say…a case of midnight morbids got to me
wc670. tw: naya rivera’s death is thought about/discussed. kento is really soft and patient/ unnecessarily emotional fluff. pmsing mentioned.
“do you remember naya rivera?”
nanami looks away from his phone, eyes curious in the blue light. you look away from him, staring blankly into the dark of your room as you clutch a plush to your chest. he sets his phone down, but you begin talking before he can properly answer you.
“she died saving her son. i think they said it was a rip current,” your brow furrows as you think about it, unsure why the tragedy even popped into your mind. it’s terribly morbid, especially right before bed. “can you imagine what that’s like?
“to realize the fun thing you were doing with your child has turned dangerous? mustering the strength to get them back to safety? do you think that comes naturally, motherly instinct? maternal love?”
“not to everybody.”
you hum thoughtfully. “it’s…funny. they said she exhausted herself saving him. she got them both back to the boat, pushed him on…i can hardly remember the whole story now. i just…the love and fear and strength that must have hardened her. in a rip current.
“i can only imagine the relief she felt once she got him back onto the boat…have you ever experienced that insane weakness that comes behind relief under non-life threatening circumstances…i…it’s something, right? to die in love. in an act of love…
“i don’t think i alone would have the strength to do that. for myself.”
“you’d be surprised what you're capable of in the moment, my love.”
“if i was protecting someone” -you’re laying on your side, causing a tear run from one eye, across the bridge of your nose, and into the other before soaking into your pillow- “i don’t doubt that i could do it. especially a child. or someone i love. it’s just…”
“are you crying?”
he turns towards you, wiping your cheeks once he realizes tears are falling. you catch the look of confusion on his face, of uncertainty as he shifts closer to you under the comforter. for a moment, you feel bad for even bringing it up.
“i’m sorry-”
“no. you’re right. it’s awful, but there must have been some comfort there…in her heart...knowing that he was safe and sound.
“there is always love in sacrifice, but to be faced with it in such a way, for her first hand as a person and a mother. for the public, knowing her as something other than just a private citizen…it’s rare. to experience and bare witness to.”
nanami pulls you in close, arms curling around you and your silly little plush as his soft lips brush your forehead. “what brought this on?”
“i don’t know. i think i’m only crying about it because i’m pmsing…i’m sorry, kento.”
he sighs. “you have nothing to be sorry about. if i’d have looked over and seen you crying i would have been quite upset- oh gosh,” he says as he feels you start to cry harder. “not at you.”
“no, i know, i just…i love you.”
he lets out a soft laugh. “yeah? i love you, too.”
“i’m not your mom. and i’m not very strong,” you comment once you’ve calmed down, clutching his shirt in your fist. “but i’m confident that the love i have for you would make me strong enough to push you up to safety.”
you feel him stutter on an inhale, his arms holding you a little tighter as he breathes your name, and it floods a sense of relief through you at the thought that he’s surprised because he has faith in you. you’re certain he does, because you have it in yourself, too.
he shifts slightly when you don’t say anything more, into a more comfortable position as he pulls you closer to him. his thumb brushes affectionately over you, his lips following as he once again brushes a kiss to your forehead.
“yeah?” he asks, an unexpected breathlessness in his voice.
it leaves you melting into him as relief settles over you, allowing you to relax enough to fall asleep. “yeah.”
