based on this except I’ve never drawn beetles before and had to use a tutorial. Also if you have any advice (besides color ) on how to make it more obvious on it being Kenzaki and Tachibana lmk.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
“And… perfect.”
Kenzaki lifted the spoon carefully, blowing on it before tasting the soup. His shoulders relaxed almost immediately.
“Yeah,” he murmured to himself, nodding. “That’ll do.”
“Can I try some?” Kotaro asked, already halfway out of his chair, eyes shining as he leaned over the counter.
Kenzaki spun around instantly. “Absolutely not.”
Kotaro froze. “…Why?”
“This soup,” Kenzaki said seriously, placing the lid back on the pot like he was guarding a treasure, “is for Tachibana-san. I forgot to get him a Christmas present, and I don’t exactly have the funds to go buy one right now.”
Kotaro’s shoulders slumped as he stared mournfully at the pot. “Just one taste,” he pleaded. “Please.”
Kenzaki flicked Kotaro lightly on the forehead. “No. Not even a spoonful.”
Kotaro yelped and rubbed his head. “You’re cruel.”
“I’m focused,” Kenzaki corrected, already grabbing a sturdy container meant for transporting food.
He carefully ladled the soup inside, making sure it was sealed tight.
“Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to deliver this before it gets cold.”
“I’m off now,” he added, already pulling on his jacket.
And just like that, he was out the door.
Kenzaki mounted Blue Spader, adjusting the container securely before starting the engine.
As he pulled away, he let out a slow breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
I really hope he’s home, he thought.
The night air was crisp, the winter breeze cool against his cheeks as he rode.
Christmas lights blurred softly past him, and despite his nerves, Kenzaki felt oddly calm. Cooking for Tachibana hadn’t felt like a chore ; it had felt… natural.
Before long, he pulled up outside Tachibana’s apartment.
He knocked once.
No response.
He knocked again, a little firmer this time.
After a moment, the door opened.
Maybe he was inconveniencing Tachibana and he should just leave.
Then Kenzaki heard the door twist open and a sigh of relief washed over him.
“Kenzaki?” Tachibana blinked in surprise before his expression softened. “What are you doing here? Come on in.”
Kenzaki bowed slightly out of habit and stepped inside. The apartment was quiet, neat, and warmly lit just like Tachibana himself.
“Sorry,” Tachibana said, closing the door. “I’m not much of a host. I haven’t had guests over in a while.”
“It’s fine,” Kenzaki replied quickly
. “Really. Don’t worry about it, Tachibana-san.”
He stood there for a moment, fingers curling slightly at his sides, then took a deep breath.
“I hope I’m not bothering you.”
Tachibana looked at him steadily.
“Of course not. I told you before I’m trying to be a better senior. I want you to feel comfortable coming to me. Any time.”
Something warm settled in Kenzaki’s chest at that.
“I came because… well,” he said, straightening. “I wanted to say Merry Christmas Eve.” He hesitated, then held out the container. “I know it’s not much, but I made you soup.”
He scratched the back of his head, embarrassed. “I’m… pretty confident in my cooking.”
Tachibana stared at the container for a moment before carefully taking it from Kenzaki’s hands.
“…Thank you,” he said softly. “That really means a lot.”
Before Kenzaki could respond, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced at it and sighed. “Tachibana-san, I’m really sorry, but it looks like I have to head out.”
“I understand,” Tachibana said. “Let me walk you out.”
They stepped outside together, the cold air sharp but refreshing. Tachibana stood quietly as Kenzaki mounted Blue Spader and adjusted his helmet.
Just as Kenzaki was about to pull away, Tachibana stepped closer.
“Stay safe, Kenzaki,” he said, voice low but sincere.
Before Kenzaki could answer, Tachibana leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek.
Kenzaki froze — just for a second then nodded, face burning.
“Thank you, Tachibana-san,” he said earnestly. “Don’t worry. I will.”
As he rode away, his hand lifted unconsciously to his cheek, heart pounding a little faster than usual.
When Kenzaki returned home, Kotaro immediately jumped up from the couch.
“You’re smiling,” Kotaro said, squinting at him. “Why are you smiling?”
“I’m not,” Kenzaki replied too quickly. “I’m going to take a shower.”
Kotaro crossed his arms. “Sure.”
Kenzaki hurried past him, but the warmth on his cheek and the quiet happiness in his chest lingered long after.
