BlacKkKlansman (2018) Spike Lee

Plot: Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first black police officer in the history of Colorado Springs Police Department. Transferred to the intelligence division, he makes contact with the KKK, and becomes a full member, even talking to the head of the organisation.

Review: BlacKkKlansman is a Spike Lee movie based on a real occurrence in the 1970′s, where a Black man joined the Ku Klux Klan. It’s a superb movie, up until Lee decides we need beating over the head with its message.

Much of the movie is subtle yet powerful, while also carrying a wry sense of humour. This isn’t a film where you are going to be rolling around holding your sides, but the juxtaposition of a black man trying to join the Klan in the 1970′s makes for some moments where you can’t help but smile. Predictably, there are a number of Trump-baiting moments, but these are done in such a way as to still be funny, and it wouldn’t have been a surprise for somebody to have done a comedy fourth-wall break as they happened. However Lee crafts a story that really works in establishing the decades race relations, and telling the tale around them.

Washington is hilarious with the comedy moments, and reminds us of his father Denzel with the more serious stuff. Adam Driver, who plays the white Ron Stallworth for the actual meetings, is on great form playing a man who hasn’t had to think about his own race before, but starts questioning. There is some great support from Michael Buscemi, Robert John Burke, and Ken Garito too, although special praise must go to Topher Grace, who nails Grand Wizard David Duke spectacularly.
