NaKniCroMo Photo Challenge, Day 10: Favorite finished project
Kelmscott. Definitely one of the most beautiful and challenging things I’ve ever knit! I started it in 2013, for goodness’ sake, and just finally finished it last November. For most of the years between, the pieces of this sweater sat - neatly blocked and all - in a bag, waiting to be seamed, because I hate seaming so much. Most of the time I knit sweaters in the round so there’s minimal seaming, but this one had separate pieces - even sleeves knit flat that had to be seamed the whole length of them! Who does that? - and that crazy shawl collar that had to be blocked just right to fit into place around the neckline. It was daunting, so I set it aside and did other things. Finally in 2019 - during the summer I think? - I got the bag out and started the seaming. I think I got most of it done, just balked again at the shawl collar. And the buttons. The pattern had a crocheted button cover to add to them and I, with rusty crochet skills, couldn’t quite get that to work with the buttons I had.
Then in November Indiana had a teacher rally at the statehouse and we wore Red for Ed - and I remembered that red sweater still waiting to be finished. It was chilly in November, so a sweater made more sense than the red ISTA t-shirts we had for the occasion, so I finally sat down and put the buttons on, omitting the crochet covers - these buttons match the sweater perfectly anyway, no need to embellish them! Now that Kelmscott is finished, I’m so proud of it, and it’s my go-to outfit for Wednesdays when we continue to wear Red for Ed. I love the elaborate lace pattern on the front, and the knitterly details at the back hem and the wrists - and even that confounding shawl collar! The sweater fits me perfectly now (another part of why the pieces sat neglected for years - I’d gained weight and realized it was going to be too small, so why finish it then? but then I lost some again, in efforts to get my diabetes better under control, which it did :-D, and also it brought this sweater back into my size range! win-win) and is definitely the most beautiful finished project I have.
