In Japanese folklore, otoroshi are mysterious yōkai who are found above the gates and doorways of shrines, temples and even homes. They are usually depicted as short, hairy creatures with tusks and blue or orange skin.

Otoroshi are masters of disguise, and can only be seen when they wish to be. They eat wild animals that enter shrines, particularly birds. They protect the places they inhabit, and will attack wicked people who enter by leaping down on them and devouring them.
