25 Songs, 25 Days One song per day along with an explanation of why you picked it. Day 2: A song that reminds you of your most recent ex-boyfriend. Easy! I had met this guy years ago. It took him four years to pluck up the courage to tell me he liked me, although I kind of sort of knew all along. We'd been seeing each other for about six months, things looked very promising... I'd gone to visit him one weekend; we lived about 50 miles apart. I'd managed to swing a work trip in his home town, but at my own expense I'd gone a day early just to hang out with him. We hung out in the bar he worked in, shot some pool, drank some whiskey... He walked me back to my hotel - the one the record label had booked that I added an extra night from my own pocket. I assumed he would stay with me; it was a long walk home for him... But he went home. Weird, I thought. But we had arranged to meet for lunch the next day before I had to work, so I didn't think much of it. I went to sleep happy; I really liked this boy - he just seemed to 'fit'. "I've liked you for years," he said. "That's not going to change now. You're the type of girl I'd like to marry one day..." Next day I called him to firm up lunch plans. No answer. So I texted him for when he woke up... 2pm rolls around. I had lunch with the girl from the record label. 6pm. Still nothing from this boy. I called. No answer again. So I texted: 'Gotta go to work now. I'll call you later.' Midnight. Still no word from the boy. So I called again. No answer. He can be quite unreliable with phones. Losing them, no credit, that sort of thing, so I wasn't too worried. I just texted him again: 'Oh well. I guess I'll see you next time you're in London.' Two weeks roll by. Yes I was anxious. I hadn't heard from him and usually I'd have a grovelling apology by now. I could see he'd been online so I dropped him a message. 'Hey. I'm worried about you. What's going on?' Again, nothing... Two weeks later I deleted his number to avoid the temptation of becoming the 'psycho ex'. Some tell me it was too much calling and texting so often that day. Considering we'd arranged to meet up I say he's lucky I didn't break his kneecaps. So that was it. No reason, no explanation, nothing. Of course I'd played everything over repeatedly in my head. I'd bumped into a mutual friend a few weeks after and asked if he'd said anything. He said no, which was weird as he'd been talking about me all the time until then. Baffling. I went to see a band in London. He was there. He had been working the sound desk. He wouldn't even look at me. Couldn't even stand to be in the same room as me, it was obvious. This really upset me as I had no idea what I was supposed to have done. This guy who claimed I was the type of girl he'd like to marry all of a sudden hated me to my very bones. I had no idea why. A couple of months later I had gone to see a band I'd grown to be friends with over the years. I went despite knowing how much it would hurt seeing this guy again - he is chief tech for them when they visit Europe. I was hanging out with the singer on the tour bus after the show. And there he was... Alcohol had gotten the better of me by this point, so I sat next to him and just said, "Well...?" He claimed he had been ill that day. So I said, "Was it amnesia? You forgot how to use your phone? Forgot I even existed? Lame excuse." He was adamant that's how it was. I knew he was lying. I didn't want to get upset. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction. I could be just as stubborn as he was. So I removed myself from the situation. Later I asked someone to go get him as I wanted to speak with him. I was told in no uncertain terms that 'He's busy'. Then the guy said something really bizarre. 'Besides, he's only got 20 quid on him.' Money. All of this had been about money! I played over everything in my head again. It was still fresh, as I had done it so many times before. So it turns out, when he offered me drinks in the bar that night, he didn't actually want to pay for them. This guy had taken offence that he had spent £10 on drinks HE OFFERED ME. Well fuck me if I thought he liked me and wanted to treat me! So when it came to my turn to shout him lunch the next day he just stood me up so he'd have something to fucking complain about! And let's gloss over the fact I had spent the fat end of £100 going to visit him a day early. Some people love to play the victim. You're not the only one who's had to make sacrifices. What a fucking shame that you had to mess things up this bad... Chris: this one's for you, you poor, victimised freak. Alexisonfire 'Keep It On Wax'
