Police arrest Gay Liberation Front members, University of Texas, Austin, February 23, 1972. Starting in 1970, LGBT students at the University of Texas fought for their chapter of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) to be granted official campus status, only to be denied based on the administration's insistence that it could not sanction an organization dedicated to the celebration of a mental illness. After internal appeals failed, the GLF sued the college and, on February 23, 1972, the group attempted to hold a dance at the Student Union to raise money to cover the costs of the suit. Despite the GLF's support from members of the student government and one city councilmember, campus police arrived and arrested many of the GLF members; the dance never started.
