Keb’ Mo’ - S/T

Out of all the blues albums I’ve been into lately and that I’ve talked about, Keb’ Mo’s 1994 sophomore album is among my favorites. Most people assume it’s his debut, but he put out an album under his actual name, Kevin Moore, in 1980, which didn’t quite go anywhere. This self-titled album, however, was very popular, and he’s one of the most popular modern blues artists currently. I briefly mentioned this album when I talked about a bunch of other albums, but I wanted to talk about this album on its own, because it’s such a great little blues album. This has a very old school country-blues and Delta blues album that reminds me a lot of Robert Johnson, even down to the really cool and old-timey styled cover art that looks like an old picture. You can tell that Keb’ amp’ loves the blues, and it doesn’t feel like he’s playing that style of music to make money or to look cool.

To be fair, though, the blues isn’t a very popular style of music, but there are a lot of artists that only perform styles of music because it’s trending. I mentioned in my review of Leon Bridges’ 2015 debut album, Coming Home, that it’s hard to get a good balance between paying homage to a style of music and just cosplaying it, but that album did a good job of paying homage to it (even if he didn’t add anything different or new to it). I would argue that Keb’ Mo’ does a bit more, because he adds more of a modern production style to this sound, as well as some modern lyricism. The lyrics are updated, but they’re not dated or full of slang. They just sound like they’re updated for a more modern audience, all the while still having that sound. His sound is also somewhat updated by having modern production behind it, and it sounds super clear, versus sounding like it’s from a bygone era.
