Don’t immediately think of Tame Impala’s previous songs “Elephant” or “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” when you listen to Currents for the first time. The almost complete disappearance of guitars brings an even more noticeable psych-rock feel to Tame Impala’s most current release (see what I did there?). Kevin Parker’s ambient voice is both stronger and better than ever, despite this album being purely “pop”.

The album begins with their famous single “Let It Happen”, which frequents synth overlapping and a constant snare drum. Though Parker’s lyrics are important, it is often difficult to understand what he is saying through the lo-fi synth droning, ever-present vocal alterations, reverb and layering.

The track “Eventually” brings smooth instrumentals and the inner soul of Kevin Parker. Through lyrics such as “But I know that I’ll be happier/ and I know that you will too, eventually” he brings personality to such synth-heavy and seemingly light-hearted tracks. To say the very least, Currents may be Parker’s breakup album.

He immediately gives himself away in his track title “New Person, Same Old Mistakes”. In contrast to the previous tracks, this synth opening and heavier sound drag you in, along with his lyrics. Reverb resonates through the line “I know you don’t think it’s right, I know that you think it’s fake, maybe fake is what I like.” Kevin Parker lets his soul free in his latest album Currents, and it’s a good thing. This Australian psych-pop group has brought the fire in each album they have released, and this one is no different. Synth-heavy tracks and the near disappearance of guitars show a different sound, but just because it is different does not mean that it is less than superb.
