Carefully and deliberately, Shiba took pains to avoid getting too close to the hiding spot lest old fears came back to haunt the kid.  Hakuri had gotten a lot better about letting others take care of him, but he still flinched and put up a guard when he was spooked.  No need to trigger that.

Shiba took a long drag and leaned against the wall near where he'd started.  Chihiro and Hakuri were lucky as hell to have found each other.  Shiba himself was lucky as hell too- no matter what he'd tried, Chihiro never opened up to him after his father's death.  Meeting and getting along with someone his own age had finally softened a few of his roughest edges, making him closer to a regular kid.  

The tender look Shiba had accidentally glimpsed while Chihiro was writing the letter to Hakuri was proof enough of that.

The person I was remixing didn't have any Kagurabachi fics yet, so I used this prompt:

Shiba acts as Chihiro and Hakuri's messenger, delivering their letters for them like the old times with Kunishige and Chiaki. Maybe Chihiro would be busy forging the new blade, and Hakuri is training with the Kamunabi. (Or any other scenario in which they are separated!) Can either be romantic/platonic.

Since it's me, it's romantic HakuHiro obviously. But there's a ton of time spent in Shiba's head so don't go in expecting wall-to-wall HakuHiro fluff.
