Kissing in Front of Sookie?
gibs had always said it like it was fact, like it was something stitched into his bones. johnny was his brother, no question about it. edel and john were the closest thing he had to parents, the kind that fed him, scolded him, loved him without asking for anything back. that house wasn’t just a place he visited, it was a place he belonged. but there was one thing he never said out loud, never dared to shape into something real, because once it was real, there was no taking it back.
he did not, and never would, see the younger kavanagh as his sister.
he couldn’t.
not when every time she laughed it settled somewhere deep in his chest, warm and permanent. not when she looked at him like she knew him, like she saw through all the jokes and the mess and still chose him anyway.
it was dangerous, the way he loved her.
so he didn’t call it that.
just buried it, buried it, buried it.
until that weekend.
johnny had asked him like it was nothing, like it was any other favor. “keep an eye on her, yeah? and sookie too. we’ll be gone the whole day, back late.” simple. easy. gibs didn’t even hesitate, just grinned and said of course, because he would’ve said yes to anything that meant being near her.
the house felt quieter without the usual chaos, just the soft padding of sookie’s paws and the hum of the television filling the space. she had claimed the couch immediately, tucked into the corner with a blanket pulled over her legs, flipping through movies with that little frown she got when she couldn’t decide.
gibs dropped beside her like he always did, too close but not close enough, shoulder brushing hers like it was accidental.
“you’re picky,” he teased, watching her scroll.
“you’re annoying,” she shot back, but there was no bite to it, just that soft smile she couldn’t quite hide.
he liked that smile more than he should.
they ended up watching whatever she chose, something half-romantic, half-stupid, the kind of movie neither of them were really paying attention to. sookie was curled at their feet, snoring lightly, and the room was dim except for the flicker of the screen.
it was comfortable.
too comfortable.
her head tipped against his shoulder at some point, like it was the most natural thing in the world, and gibs went still for a second, afraid to breathe too hard in case it scared her off. but she didn’t move away. if anything, she leaned closer, her fingers absentmindedly twisting into the fabric of his hoodie.
that was when it shifted.
not all at once, not something loud or obvious, just a quiet change in the air, like something unspoken finally pushing to the surface.
he looked down at her, really looked, and she was already looking at him.
no teasing, no jokes.
just her.
his heart kicked hard against his ribs, and for a second, he thought about johnny, about all the lines he wasn’t supposed to cross, about how wrong this could go.
but then she moved, just slightly, her face tilting up, her breath brushing his lips, and whatever sense he had left slipped clean through his fingers.
“gibs,” she whispered, like a question, like a warning.
he didn’t answer with words.
he kissed her.
soft at first, hesitant, like he was giving her time to pull away, to laugh it off, to say it was a mistake. but she didn’t. her hand came up to his jaw instead, steadying him, and she kissed him back like she’d been waiting for it just as long.
that was all it took.
the hesitation snapped.
his hand found her waist, pulling her closer, and suddenly the movie didn’t matter, the house didn’t matter, nothing did except the way she fit against him like she always had, only now it meant something different. something heavier. something he couldn’t pretend away anymore.
when they finally broke apart, it wasn’t far.
their foreheads pressed together, breaths tangled, the quiet louder than anything.
gibs let out a shaky laugh, more disbelief than humor. “we’re so fucked.”
she smiled, soft and a little breathless, like she didn’t care.
“yeah,” she said, like it was the easiest thing in the world.
and maybe it was.
because for the first time, gibs wasn’t trying to bury it. he wasn’t pretending it was something it wasn’t.
he just leaned in and kissed her again.
