You can tell a lot about someone by the type of music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your IPod, Phone, ITunes, media player, trntbl, etc and write down the first 20 songs. Then pass this on to 10 people. One rule: no skipping.

Now child you sit here and let me tell you about the long ago before times. Long before Grandma Nore took her first steps or opened those blue eyes. Before the first stars began their endless dance about the heavens when Ogwe looked out on the vast dark dominion that was time before time and found it full of possibility. Reaching out it called forth the first Malua, the mighty shades of darkness. From the tips of his fingers crawled the Kheves, full of raucous good cheer and the sharp tang of blood and death. From his tongue slithered the ruthless Dagdun and his wife the bloodthirsty Mama Baionetta. From the recesses of his ears emerged the wailing sisters, Nouga, Betal and little sister Shugi. And Ogwe pronounced them good. He gave them license over the dark spaces, the concealed crevices, the deep silences and all of the dark firmament that was the world.Â
However the dark spirits eventually became not enough for Ogwe. For no matter how clever or bold its first children were, there was no way to see them in the womb of darkness. So the great god open its eyes and light streamed forth into the children. My child, my child, imagine the first day you opened your eyes onto this world, when everything was new. Then make it bigger. Make it louder. Make it more powerful and you still will not have 1/10 of the majesty of that moment.Â
From his fingers came came five more beings, the Ouada with their soft-spoken willfulness. First came Oshugba with his bag of wit and on his heels bountiful Kipsie Waga and her overflowing gumbo pot. Next came Wata and Hata whose real names not even the Malua know. And finally came Little Boy Bo with his brown braids and toy drums, whose dance could make you weep for the grace of it and beg him to play the stars as his instrument.
And Ogwe, showing them the face of the Old Man with bristling beard and hair of frizzled briny white, looked over his creations and declared, "Now you must entertain me," but before the assembled spirits could display their various prowesses, the great god added. "By making something new."
And so the Malua fell to arguing, for it is in the nature of children to compete for the approval of their parents. Oshugba argued that only with the sharp power of light could the great creator be amused, which offended Mama Baionetta, so that she filled the world with sound, which is born in the dark. Wata and Hata fell upon Nouga and Betal and darkness warred with light, creating the pinpricks of light that we now know as stars. Dagdun rode into battle to the defense of his wife, his maw extended to devour them all, only to be walloped by Kipsie Waga's cooking ladle.Â
Only little sister Shugi and Little Boy Bo abstained from the battle having discovered something miraculous all on their own. When Little Boy Bo stood behind Shugi he cast her shadow along the ground. He moved further further back until the shadow they cast was the size of a man. Bo clapped and clapped with glee. "Why look what we have made!"Â
Kipsie Waga who was more maternal than the rest ceased her battle and waded to the two children and ascertained that the children had in fact fulfilled the requirements of the great Ogwe. "Perhaps," she murmured with the breath of spring. "It could use a little warmth," and she breathed her compassion into it.
Nouga elbowed her way to the shadow. "Oh no! You've made it too much like you. You need to give it a little spice." And she gave the shadow her temper. Shugi looked up angrily and stated, "But I made it," she pouted and endowed the shadow with her curiosity.
"But it's mine too," Bo protested and added his grace.
Oshugba shook his head. "This mix is too dangerous," he stated gravely and sprinkled it with a dose of wit. At this point the shadow writhed and burgeoned and although the others wished to make their own contribution. The shadow solidified and the first man stood blinking in the shadow.
The other five, not to be outdone, quickly created their own man, but this one turned out a bit different. This one was a woman. They excitedly began trying as many combinations as they could make shadows, making men and women of every shade and temperament and while they did the great God Ogwe laughed and laughed.
Turning to them in the aspect of the eternal mother, with flowing locks of ebon and endless starry gaze, she said, "We should make a home for your toys my children." The light from her gaze hit the darkness and formed the world from the shadow, with its endless seas and dense forests. "These promise to be endlessly amusing."
It was at this point that the Kheves stood. "But great one, we have not made our contribution." And the five barons bowed to each other in turn. "After you," "No after you." "No no, I insist. After you."
"Enough!" cried Ogwe with amusement. "Very well what is your contribution?"
The eldest Kheve grinned and snapped his thin fingers, making a click like the snap of bone and the entire population died on the spot.Â
There were murmurs of outrage and Ogwe whirled on the Kheves with murder in its heart. "You dare!"
But the eldest Kheve just smirked. "But great creator. Now you can never get bored. For you must always have new ones."
And so child, that is why we die. So that Ogwe may never be bored, that we might return to the sacred shadow from which we were made. But the story is not over.
Ogwe, though admitting to the sense of the Kheves, was so enraged at the Kheves that it restricted their access to our world, which is why we do not die all at once anymore, but rather one at a time. Still, my child, you must remember never to call a one of the Barons, for then Ogwe's protection does not rest on you child and the Malua will have to form you again in a new life and who knows which five traits you will get next time.
My day thus far:
Jean-Luc Picard sold me coffee.
I have a brand new reason to not be able to see hedgehogs and Cheetos in the same sentence. (Shit.)
All my friends were sucked into a parallel universe, except the goat.
I found an Ali-Chan. But it was one of the clones. You can tell because they're just a shade too happy.
The flatmate barely escaped with is his life. He says he was in....*horrified whisper* Desert Bluffs.
