Katsusei, Plaza Senayan, Jakarta
My go to place for savory, crispy, delicious, de-yum-yum pork sirloin katsu in Jakarta!
Hidden in the basement of Plaza Senayan, through the hurdles of shopping housewives and lunching employees, there lie some hidden Japanese restaurant gems, and amongst them is this one! What makes this and the other two Japanese restaurants in the area special is their quiet atmosphere, which makes them feel homey. There are not more than 30 seats in these restaurants and they are rarely full.
From my experience dining with friends at Katsusei, my friends tend to be taken aback by the price tags. However, browse the menu further! If you are low on the $$$ side, order the ala carte menu (do you even eat those tray-filler side dishes anyway?). If you are totally broke, then get the SMALL ala carte menu. No excuses! The ala carte menu only consists of chopped iceberg, a lemon cutlet for the iceberg, tiny (but powerful) Japanese mustard and whatever fried protein you order, which is definitely enough for the empty stomach.
I always order the small ala carte Pork Sirloin Katsu and go crazy on the peanut sauce (I like to mix four scoops of sesame seeds with a lot of peanut sauce and a dash of the other sauce - whatever that is).
Other selections are fine too, such as the Tonkatsu and the tenderloin pork option, but I honestly like sirloin better because of the tiny fatty section on the side of the meat, which gives that sort of firework sensation on my mouth. God bless you sirloin pork katsu!
I guess the only complain I have about this place is the slow service! I swear I waited for more than 20 minutes for the dishes to arrive. There are only about 2-3 cooks, so I guess it is quite expected.
So if you haven't visited Katsusei, please do so! If you have, then tell us your experience!
