OH. OH REALLY. HERES WHY I WAS ANNOYED ABOUT THIS DECISION SPECIFICALLY

(setting aside all of my other criticisms of the handling of that ending but hey thats rant for another time)

I think that Katnis is, or rather, should have been aroace. Not a particularly strong starting point because admittedly this is a headcannon and obviously wasn't reflected in the author's decisions which is not an issue. That's fine, I just don't like how forced her romances felt and I feel like she would have been better off secure in familial and platonic relationships (rip those dreams). Look, it's ok that she ended up with Peeta. It's fine. It might not be what I would have liked but their romance was mostly handled well (ignoring some convenient times to ignore that consent is a thing... well, the relationship had to be forced for publicity in the games, I get it it's fine, and eventually they do end up actually being relatively cute together and authentically supportive of each other)

HOWEVER. leading on from the forced-ness of the romances, her 'decision' to have kids didn't feel like a decision at all. "It took five, ten, fifteen years for me to agree. But Peeta wanted them so badly". Hm. To me it sounds like the feelings that mattered most in this decision were Peeta's. And look, for it to be in character I'm sure Peeta would have never been anything other than patient, respectful and kind to her, but it just felt poorly handled.

SPEAKING OF CHARACTER. I have seen people saying "oh she only didn't want kids because of the hunger games and the conditions they would grow up in but now that they're over -" NO. FUCKING NO. SHE FUCKING VOTED FOR THERE TO BE ANOTHER FUCKING HUNGER GAMES TO PUNISH THE CAPITOL'S KIDS. UM. WHAT? SO OUT OF CHARACTER WHY WOULD SHE DO THAT. And don't come to me with your 'Oh hurt people hurt people' NO. SHE IS SMART, SHE HAS SEEN WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STAND BY, SHE KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE PAIN AND KILLING CHILDREN OBVIOUSLY AINT IT.

Anyway, I don't really care if you agree with me or not, you're entitled to your opinion and this was really ranty but I was annoyed, ok? Because sure, it was written a while ago and maybe some of the the relationship dynamics aren't the most modern things in the world, but I'm allowed to be annoyed lol.

Whether you think she should have ended up having kids with Peeta or not, whether you think all the.... *other* decisions made at the end of that book plot-wise were good, I don't mind. But I must say they were disappointingly executed.
