Vignelli Television
“We’re against prettiness.” –– Massimo Vignelli from By Design.
We’re joining American Archive of Public Broadcasting in celebrating 50 years of Public Television! They have asked archives to show off their FIRSTS. We think the first time this 1982 Vignelli documentary by Roberto Guerra and Ella Hershon was broadcast on PBS was in 1987 on Channel 13 WNET in New York. It was one episode in a series called By Design, which also featured episodes on Elliot Erwitt, Karl Lagerfeld, Milton Glaser, and Benjamin Thompson.
40 years later in 2012, Roberto Guerra and Kathy Brew created a new documentary Design Is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli which featured the opening of the Vignelli Center in 2010! Kathy Brew has generously donated the footage from their documentary and some of Guerra’s other film work including a 16mm film reel and master 1” video tape for the 1982 By Design episode on the Vignellis.
We have a DVD of the film if you want to come and watch!
