When he sees any potential signs that youβll leave him he starts to spiral because he canβt lose the love that keeps him going. Makes him feel safe. Makes him worth something other than a pawn for his father.
That comes with you constantly telling him heβs perfect and important to you. That youβll never leave him.

I totally agree with you there. He had a lack of love and genuine feelings in his life while growing up, so he would be clingy and obsessed with someone who's in a relationship with him. And, of course, the important thing here is the fact that his father constantly told him that he needed to be better, stronger, that he was not doing enough right now. It definitely played a role in his self-esteem. Yes, Mattheo is a cocky jerk. But I believe that deep down he has a lot of insecurities. He thinks that he need to earn love and praise, to deserve it.
Before you two even started dating, he would scare off every guy who breathed in your direction. You were his before you even knew it, and heβd scared off anyone who tried to steal you away from him.
But I also think that he would be very, like VERY cautious about it at first. Like, babe, it's all new to him. He doesn't even know what to be in a healthy, loving, and caring relationship means. So if someone is showing a genuine interest in him first, he would be like, 'Why do they keep coming to me? They want something from me or what?'
In my head, he would be scared to death to show his vulnerability and emotions. But once he's in, Merlin saves you, he would be a lovesick fool for you.
Also, I believe that possessiveness can be a healthy thing. His very high pda level - a desire to protect you as his partner, both emotionally and physically. Not from a place of jealousy (but from it too, in his case) but from genuine care. He wants you to feel safe and loved around him 24/7. And it comes with constant praise during your intimacy. He would just shower you with it β 'You look so beautiful underneath me, babe', 'Yes, pretty thing, keep moaning my name just like that'.
It's kinda related to exclusive commitment and feeling of belonging too. Possessiveness there can show up as a natural desire for exclusivity β he wants to be your person, and you want to be his. And maybe he likes to show it off to everyone, to let them know that you're off-limits, and he's a lucky bastard who has you. He would feel proud to have you as a partner in his life and naturally want to keep your bond strong and acknowledged by the others. Cocky and cheeky π€
To sum up, I think his possessiveness is out of question. It's just vary from "Why sit in a chair when you have my lap, babe?" with absolutely puppy eyes to "Know your place, darling. It's right there, on my lap." with a low and possessive murmur β depends on the version of Mattheo and the author's view.

I'm really sorry for such a late reply β life's been busy, and also my author's self-worth decided that I need a break from the Tumblr
Lawyer!Mattheo is one of my favorite creations tbh. I like the character and the plot a lot. My first chapter turned out well, so I was strangling to continue it while being satisfied with it and characters dynamics as well. Sometimes, my thoughts make me delete and rewrite the whole fic a few times β and that's what happened to the second chapter repeatedly ( οΏ£β½οΏ£)
But now I'm back, have a vision that sounds satisfying for me, and I'm learning to be easy on myself to actually post and not just write a whole bunch of drafts (writers can be really hypercritical with their creations). So I'll continue to work on it and, hopefully, will post it soon
