The Helmut Stahl Collection of Casinos
Dr. Peter Christen reports: The following collection of Casino Bonds & Shares sold November 17, 2016 at Spink London is probably one of the most comprehensive thematic collections of its kind. It contains more than 200 items from 15 countries and has taken 30 years to acquire.
Most of the items are from Europe. This is the epitome of modern Casino companies, Monaco and the cradle of modern roulette in the town of Baden-Baden, Bad Homburg and Wiesbaden. The collection contains many certificates from these companies, even several founder shares.
During a visit to the Paris Stock Exchange it was pure chance that Helmut Stahl passed a small shop where he found a share of a French casino company. The stockbroker who accompanied him had the spontaneous idea to buy the certificate for his friend as a present. The foundation was thus laid for a lifelong interest in Bonds and Shares.
Helmut Stahl did not seek publicity and in addition his free time was limited as he was directing his successful business. He was therefore represented at most auctions by his agent or a colleague.
Following his premature death, his collection was taken on by his daughter who continued to acquire additional pieces making the collection unique. Due to age, the collection is now being offered to the market in the hope that enthusiasts will continue the process and give these pieces a good home.
Kurhaus-Gesellschaft Baden. Aktie Fr. 200, Baden 31.3.1874, #948. The Baden mineral hot springs have been famed since at least the Roman era. In 1871, several owners of hotels and spas decided to build a casino to attract international guests. Works started in 1872. In May 1875 the two-storied building and park was opened. As the construction budget of 400,000 Francs was exceeded by 80 percent and the company was close to bankruptcy, the city of Baden took over the Kurhaus. Today the Kursaal is managed Grand Casino Baden. With impressive image of the Kurhaus. One of the rare issued shares.

Dr. Peter Christen berichtet: Die folgende am 17. November 2016 bei Spink London angebotene Sammlung von Casino-Zertifikaten - siehe hier - dürfte die weltweit wohl umfangreichste Spezialsammlung von historischen Wertpapieren dieses Themenkreises sein. Mit viel Engagement wurden in über 30 Jahren mehr als 200 Exponate aus 15 Ländern zusammengetragen.
Die Mehrzahl der Titel stammt aus Europa, befindet sich doch auch hier die Wiege der neuzeitlichen Casino-Gesellschaften – Monte Carlo. Im 19. Jahrhundert entstanden nach gleichem Vorbild Häuser in Baden-Baden, Bad Homburg und Wiesbaden. Von diesen Gesellschaften finden sich diverse Aktien und Anleihen, teils aus den Gründerjahren, in der einmaligen Sammlung.
Nach einem Besuch der Börse in Paris entdeckte Helmut Stahl rein zufällig in einem kleinen Laden eine Aktie einer französischen Casino-Gesellschaft. Der ihn begleitende Börsenmakler hatte die gute Idee, ihm dieses Zertifikat zu schenken. Der Grundstein für ein lebenslanges Interesse an historischen Wertpapieren war gelegt.
Helmut Stahl war ein eher öffentlichkeitsscheuer Mensch. So verwundert es nicht, dass er sich auf Auktionen stets vertreten ließ. Als erfolgreicher Geschäftsmann war seine Freizeit auch eher knapp bemessen. Diese verbrachte er dann gerne mit Recherchen zu börsengültiger Wertpapieren und ab und zu mit dem Besuch eines Casinos. So schließt sich ein Kreis.
Nach seinem frühen Tod wurde die Sammlung von seiner Tochter fortgeführt. Auf Auktionen wurden noch etliche Raritäten erworben, so dass man nunmehr von einer wirklich einmaligen Sammlung sprechen kann. Aus Altersgründen steht diese nun dem Sammlermarkt zur Verfügung - in der Hoffnung, dass sich ein Liebhaber findet, der sie fortzuführen bereit ist.
Fermes réunies du Kurhaus et des Sources Minérales Hombourg-ès-Monts., Action 100 Gulden, Hombourg-ès-Monts 1.10.1859, #9040, with Signature of Francois Blanc (1806-1877). In the town of Bad Homburg in 1838 two French brothers, François and Louis Blanc, contributed to the final breakthrough of Roulette as the main game played in casinos. They convinced Count Philip to approve the construction of a new casino and commenced a vast advertising campaign in magazines, even offering free stay to journalists. Their boldest move, however, was the removal of the ‘double-zero’ wheel and its replacement with todays ‘single-zero’ wheel roulette. Bad Homburg got the reputation as being the casino where it was the easiest to win, attracting all the rich and famous, consequently, the town grew into Europe’s No. 1 in gambling.
Gesellschaft zum Betrieb des Cur-Etablissements in den Badeorten Wiesbaden & Ems., Actie 100 Gulden, Wiesbaden 2.1.1857, Unissued. The first privilege for gambling was granted by Duc Carl von Nassau-Usingen in 1771. Eleven years later Roulette was introduced. 1810 the casino opened in the “Alte Kurhaus”.
Bains de Mer et Cercle des Étrangers à Monaco., 10 Actions de F250, Monaco 8.4.1863. The history of the Société des Bains de Mer SBM is closely tied to that of the principality of Monaco. It was established in 1863 by a Sovereign Decree passed by Prince Charles III for building and operating the bath and the casino of Monaco.
Roulette de Monte Carlo, 20% Obligation F 500 au Porteur. Paris, 1 Novembre 1924, Nr. 12. This certificate is one of the colour reproductions of No. 12 made for inclusion in “The Box in a Valise” by Arturo Schwarz in 1941. With printed signature of Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), probably one of the most important artist of the 20th century. He founded the company in November 1924 to finance his new passion for Roulette and his project to break the bank of the Casino in Monte Carlo.
