I just discovered this game (thanks to your lovely blog!), and I'm trying to make a Japanese Apple ID in order to play it. Do I need to enter a Japanese credit card in order to make the new ID? It doesn't work with my current credit card, and as far as I know, there's no way to bypass this.

Hm, unfortunately I don’t know about this (since I’m an android user). From what I’ve heard you’re going to need a Japanese adress, but my last information on this dates back to November 2015.
Maybe someone who reads this blog could help out?
