100年の歴史を持つ、日本一の道具専門店街
大正初期、江戸期に造られた新堀川の両岸に数軒の古道具屋や小間物屋が商売を始めたことが道具街の始まりとされる。川は大正12（1923）年に暗渠化された。
合羽橋の由来は、金竜小学校跡地周辺にかつて伊予新谷の城主の下屋敷があり、侍が内職で作った雨合羽を近くの橋に干していたという説と、文化年間に合羽屋喜八が私財を投げ売って掘割工事を始めた際、捗らない工事を隅田川の河童たちが助けたという説がある。
