The first layer was outlined with black, black shadows and white where used to disguise and lighten unwanted areas. The 2nd stage of the cover up shows the first pass of color and additional white was lined over any unwanted old lines. Tonight ‘The Messenger Ritual’ opens at Antler Gallery in Portland, Oregon. “Antler gallery is excited to share with you their latest exhibition, featuring the work of three of Portland’s burgeoning artists. Jon MacNair, Morgaine Faye and Susannah Kelly have all worked closely with Antler Gallery since we opened in 2012 and are woven tightly into the tapestry of our history (assuming such a thing exists). In The Messenger Ritual each of the three artists have devised their own very unique series dealing with different ideas of communication. “Vigor Mortis” focusses on cross-species interactions gone awry. “A common theme in my new series is a comment on the unintended consequences of human interactions with animals. Many of the skulls were sourced from road kills. I wanted to bring them back to life, memorialize and bestow them on high regard by adorning, and giving them a beautiful final resting spot.
