Kamancheh, Musical Instrument, Persia (Iran), ca. 1869
Met Museum New York
Provenance: The Crosby Brown Collection of Musical Instruments, 1889
36 1/2 × 10 3/16 × 9 in. (92.7 × 25.8 × 22.9 cm)
The kamancheh (also kamānche or kamāncha) (Persian: کمانچه) is an Iranian bowed string instrument, used also in Armenian, Azerbaijani, Turkish and Kurdish music. During the Safavid and Qajar periods, the Kamancheh was one of the most important instruments which was used in celebration scenes.
In English the instrument is sometimes called the spiked fiddle. It is played sitting down held like a cello though it is about the length of a viol.

Congratulations on 700 followers 🎉 😁 I love your art, how about masked Leroux Erik playing a kamancheh in persia? Was the most interesting instrument I could think of.
Erik’s mask is based on an old Persian warrior mask. (Just Google Image “Persian mask” and you’ll find it.) Hopefully Erik’s isn’t made out of iron or that thing would weigh a ton :P
Heyyyy
So I reached a nice little milestone in followers recently and I decided it’s high time to post some of my original music again! This is a piece called “רחשים מן העבר” (Rahashim Min Ha’Avar - Whispers from the Past) and is written for treble viol, guitar, and kamancheh. I’d bet real money that this ensemble has never been composed for before just because of how unusual it is. The texture here is very thin except for a few parts in the middle, and it’s meant to be kind of a reminder of times that aren’t exactly able to be remembered, if that makes any sense. This recording took place at my recital so I apologize if there are noises in the background and everything. If you’re impatient I’d suggest skipping to the middle where things get more exciting. Enjoy!!
