"Adam, how do you feel about the chokehold that textile mills and forecasting agencies have on the fashion industry as a whole to manipulate trends? Have you found your brand having to also pay the subscription fees to them for their manufactured 'predictions' just to keep up? If not, do you find that it's caused friction between you and other high-end designers that do?"
"If they were working towards the betterment of the industry, I would have a vastly different opinion of them. As it is? They are parasites that latched onto and leech from genuine creativity and soul. If you do not pay fealty to them, then you fall behind. You will miss out on 'trends' - not those made organically by the whims of expression, but because they are engaging in a self-fufilling prophecy to line their pockets."
Adam cannot hide his disgust. He does not try to; that is not who he is.
"I am ashamed to admit that I was not immune to such things, when I was seeking to get established. You cannot break trends if you are not in a position to follow them at all. It is hypocritical, perhaps, but it is also the nature of the industry at large. As for friction? Certainly. I do not build for trends these days; my brands are aimed towards expression for those who are not in a position to buy from the higher-end designers. It invited much mockery and ridicule a few years ago."
