It is a very sensitive topic and very controversial: the question of whether or not abortion should be legal. The two points of views are separated into pro life and pro choice. The question is, is it really our choice? Each year, abortion kills as many Americans as have been killed on all battlefields in all of the wars in U.S. history combined. Over 53 million abortions have been performed in the U.S. since 1973.

In order to come to a conclusion on this difficult topic the common misconception that a fetus isn’t a baby before a certain point needs to be obliterated. The most common stage in which the fetus is aborted is about eight to nine weeks after conception. At this point, the baby already has eyelids, and is able to move.

 Many people argue that making abortion illegal would lead to many more back alley abortions, which could be extremely dangerous. Although this would be inevitable, illegality would significantly decrease the amount of abortions. Statistics show that 1% of abortions are performed after of rape or incest, 1% due to fetal abnormalities, 3% as a result of concern for the mother’s health, and 95% are performed out of convenience.

The Hazards of Technology

Instant access to information at the click of a button or a tap of the finger can be life saving for a student who is scrambling to finish an assignment for school. While this capability is convenient and theoretically useful, research has shown that it has its disadvantages.

Technology used in school has “fried” the minds of many students, leaving them with shorter attention spans and minds conditioned to find quick answers instead of analyzing and coming to conclusions of their own. In a school setting meant to challenge the minds of the future leaders of our nation and cause them to make discoveries that could potentially change the world, technology is definitely a setback in producing the kind of thinking strategies that will bring the young generation to an intelligent and fruitful future. While the internet is thought of as having all the answers, it will never have the capacity to have revelations of its own.

With that being said, when students limit themselves to the knowledge of what has already been discovered, they are preventing new discoveries that could be found by reading and thinking for themselves. Instead, they obtain instant answers via technology. Although it is the easier route, technology should not be used in school settings for the sake of the mind and the future of the world.

A Tech-Savvy Education

Marc Prensky, an American education writer, states that “Our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach.” This is especially true when students are faced with today’s evolving technology. Technology allows students to learn with so much more success than ever before. Whether it connects different schools together through ITV or allows a student to learn something new when researching the country of Ukraine, technology definitely has a place in schools today.

  Here’s the situation: a teacher assigns a student a research project on racial bias in the media. What does he or she do? Will the student spend endless amounts of time searching the archives of a library for appropriate news articles, or will he or she elect to search a few key terms on Google? The answer is obvious- use the much more convenient search engine on the internet. As of 2006, seven years ago, nearly 100% of all schools were connected to the internet.

  Technology is not only good for research purposes; it can also be utilized in cases where children with special needs require alternative methods of education. Technology helps these children get the help they need. If a student needs to learn at their own pace, technology allows them to do so. If a student needs extra help to comprehend a topic, technology will give them the help they need.
