It started on a completely ordinary day in late September.  Or, it started earlier, the day Kate first met Lucy, or the day Lucy was born, perhaps, or centuries before either of them were even an idea; but it was on a completely ordinary day in late September that Kate first noticed the cat.

Kate was looking through Commander Walters autopsy results, standing next to the window and using the bright sunshine outside to read since the morgue lighting was a little dim and creepy, when she felt a prickle at the back of her neck like she was being watched.  When she looked up, there was a cat sitting on the outside ledge of the window.

And Kate could swear it was reading the report, too.

Kate meets a cat multiple times under some strange circumstances. Why is the cat around so much and what does Lucy have to do with it?

Kate enters the bar in time to hear Lucy taking Jesse to task.

“What the hell Jesse? What’s wrong with you?”

“What? It’s a valid question!” Came Jesse’s equally loud reply.

She quickly heads in the direction the voices came from.

She reaches the table in time to hear Lucy’s response.

“That’s sick!”

Kate surveys the table and notes that Lucy, Jesse, Kai, and Ernie are feeling no pain. They are clearly several rounds in.

Lucy spots Kate.

“Heeeeeeeeey, it’s my fierce warrior lady!”

“Fierce warrior lady? Does she conquer your…” Ernie starts.

“Ernie, don’t you dare finish that sentence.” Kate warns, glaring at him.

Ernie stops and mimes zipping his mouth.

“Baaaaabbbbbe, Jesse wants to eat our pets.” Lucy tells Kate unhappily.

Kate turns her glare towards Jesse.

Jesse puts his hands up.

“I did not say that!”

“Jesse! Why would you…wait…Lucy…we don’t have any pets.” Kate says gently turning her attention to her girlfriend.

“I knowww, he wants to eat our pets from the farm.”

“What farm?”

“After we get married we’re going to move to a farm and raise alpacas and chickens. Alpacas for me and chickens for you.”

Kate felt a burst of affection for her adorable girlfriend. Marriage was a long way off but it was a matter of when not if.

Apparently she was silent for a little too long.

“Do you not want to marry me and raise alpacas and chickens on a farm?” Lucy asked, voice heavy with sadness, eyes downcast.

Kate lifts Lucy’s chin to make sure she’s looking at Kate.

“Lucy, there is nothing I would love more than to marry you and raise alpacas and chickens.”

Lucy rewards Kate with a blinding smile. But then her smile falters.

“But what do we do about him? He had the nerve to ask if we would be raising them for meat. He wants to eat our pets!” Lucy exclaims pointing at Jesse.

“Well I guess Jesse can’t come over. Gotta keep our pets safe.” Kate replies.

“Agreed. Sorry Jesse.” Lucy shrugs and then turns her attention back to her drink.

“It was a valid question.” Jesse groans.

Kate smiles as Kai gives him a comforting pat on the shoulder.

As Lucy walks into the FBI building with files in hand she realises that this is the first time she’s ever been to Kate’s office. As the door to the elevator closes Lucy thinks back to when Kate introduced her to her boss and her team but the thought of walking into Kate’s office during work hours suddenly makes her nervous. She is pulled out of her thoughts as the elevator dings open, she takes a deep breath before walking towards Kate’s office. She hesitates before knocking on the door.

“Come in” she hears Kate's voice. 

Kate has paperwork that she needs to get done before she can go home to Lucy. She looks up when there’s a knock on the door, she expects an NCIS agent that was supposed to bring her the files she had requested. She’s pleasantly surprised when she looks up to see Lucy standing there with a small smile on her face.

“Special Agent Whistler the files you requested” Lucy says as she closes the door behind her, the surprise and smile on her girlfriend’s face helps calms her nerves

Kate stands up and walks towards Lucy, gives her a gentle kiss “ not that I’m complaining but you really didn’t have to come all the way here, I know you’re busy.” 

Lucy blushes a little “well I missed my girlfriend” she says a little nervously. They try to keep it professional at work and Lucy is not sure how Kate was going to react.

Lucy gasps as she’s pushed against the door, Kate’s lips on her instantly and her hands find their place on her hips. Lucy deepens the kiss and her hands slide into the back on Kate’s pant pockets as she grips her ass. 

Lucy tilts her head a little and Kate instantly starts peppering kisses on the expanse of Lucy’s neck. Lucy’s phone buzzes and she hears Kate groan into her neck because she pulls back.

“You should take that Special Agent Lucy Tara” Kate says a little breathlessly. 

Lucy tries collecting herself before answering the phone “ I’m on my way Tennant” Lucy says hoping that Tenant doesn’t hear the tremble in her voice. She ends the call before pulling Kate into a bruising kiss, she hears Kate moan a little before she pulls back.

“As much as I want to fuck you in my office, you should go” Kate says with her hands over Lucy’s shirt

Lucy gulps and clenches her thighs subtly. “ Yes I uh should uh go, but later?” 

Kate kisses her once more “ Later it’ll be worth it, I promise Special Agent Lucy Tara” Kate says as she walks back to her chair.

Kate and Lucy were sitting on their bench waiting for their coffee orders.

Lucy had something she wanted to talk about and she knew Kate could tell.

“Kate…I…” Lucy was interrupted by Kate’s phone alerting her to an incoming message.

Kate pulls out her phone and looks up apologetically.

“I have to head back to the office. Looks like we might have a break in our case.”

“Okay we’ll put a pin in this.” Lucy responds, understanding how things are in their line of work.

“How about we grab lunch together? I’ll come by the bullpen and pick you up around 12:30?” Kate asks hopefully.

“That sounds great.” Lucy replies with a smile.

Kate stands up, leans over and kisses Lucy and then departs.

Sometime later Lucy’s at her desk when she hears the bullpen door open. She looks up and sees Kate enter. She glances at the time on her computer and her eyes widen. 12:45pm. She’s been busy with her case so didn’t realize it was time to meet Kate.

“Hey you.” She greets warmly.

“Hey. I know we’re both super busy so I picked up a couple of sandwiches.” Kate said lifting the sandwiches in to view.

Lucy notes they are from her favourite sandwich place.

“Yes!!! Let’s go into the conference room and eat.” Lucy gets up from her chair and leads the way.

Lucy opens the door, waits for Kate to enter and then closes the door behind them.

As they get situated in their seats Kate hands Lucy’s sandwich to her.

They open their sandwiches and eat a couple of bites in silence.

“How’s your case going?” Lucy asks, breaking the silence.

“It’s a work in progress. But I know that’s not what you want to talk about.” Kate prods.

Lucy sits back in her chair. She knows she’s been a little distracted since she received the phone call yesterday.

She puts her sandwich down.

“Yesterday I got a call that kind of caught me off guard and I’ve been trying to figure out how to talk to you about it.” She admits.

“You can tell me anything Lucy. It will be okay.” Kate assures.

Lucy gives Kate a soft smile.

“That call yesterday was from…”

Just then the door swings open and Ernie barrels in.

“Lucy I got a line on your suspect’s last known location!”

Lucy looks at Ernie and then turns to Kate.

“Duty calls.” She sighs.

“We’ll talk later. I’ll see you at home after work.” Kate says.

Lucy nods and then gets up and is about to follow Ernie out the door.

“Wait!” Kate calls out.

Lucy turns around.

“Take your sandwich. You don’t want to be hangry this afternoon.” Kate advises with a grin.

“Always looking out for me…and the team.” Lucy says affectionately as she picks up the sandwich and follows Ernie to his lair.

She and Kate didn’t have much time to talk during the rest of the work day.

Lucy ends up at Kate’s apartment first. She lets herself in with her key and places her keys and bag on the table as she manoeuvres around the apartment.

She hears the message alert on her phone. She picks up her phone and sees the message is from Kate.

Kate indicates she’s going to be home late and for Lucy to make herself at home.

Lucy changes into her pjs and then thinks about making dinner. Instead she moves past the kitchen and heads out on to the balcony. The plan is to rest for a few minutes before cooking but she ends up nodding off.

She hears a noise in the apartment and wakes up with a start. It’s dark out now and there is a full moon. She turns to investigate what woke her up and notices that Kate is back.

Kate steps up to the balcony door.

“Hey I took a chance and picked up a pizza on the way home. I’m just going to get changed and then we can eat. Feel free to start before me if you’re starving.”

“I’ll wait for you my love.” Lucy states and notices a slight blush on Kate’s face as she heads to her bedroom.

Lucy stands up and stares at the moon almost as if mesmerized. Really she’s thinking about that phone call.

“Penny for your thoughts.” Kate’s gentle voice comes a few minutes later.

Lucy turns to look at her and watches as Kate settles in to one of the chairs, ready to listen to Lucy.

Lucy sits in her usual chair and starts speaking.

“That call yesterday was from my mom. She said her and my dad are going to be on the island for some meetings next month and they want to see me. I wish my parents were the type of people who would be happy to meet the person I’m dating and I want to introduce you to them but I know what they are like and I don’t want to subject you to that.” Lucy admits.

“I love how protective you are Lucy amongst many other things I love about you. I’m a big girl and can take whatever they can dish out.” Kate asserts.

“You shouldn’t have to!” Lucy exclaims.

Kate gets up and kneels down in front of Lucy.

“No…neither of us should have to but I know you’d do the same for me because we love each other and want to look out for each other. Lucy, I’d like to be there for you but if you prefer to go alone then that’s fine. I’ll support whatever you want to do.”

Lucy leans her forehead on Kate’s.

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.” Kate states with conviction.

“Okay, then you’re meeting my parents next month.”

“Can’t wait.” Kate says smiling.

“I love you.” Lucy says quietly.

“I love you too.”

Kate pats Lucy’s knee and stands up.

“Come on. Let’s go have our cold pizza dinner.” Kate says as she pulls her up.

“That’s an offer a girl can’t refuse.” Lucy replies grinning.

“Oh I’ll have some more interesting offers after dinner.” Kate promises with a wink.

“Now I can’t wait.”

Lucy and Kate were having a lazy day at home.

They had spent an extra couple of hours in bed in the morning enjoying each other’s company.

When they finally left the bedroom, they had a leisurely breakfast.

They were now lounging on the sofa, sitting at opposite ends but facing each other. They were reading different sections of the newspaper.

Lucy finished her section and placed it on the table.

She sat in silence for a moment, watching Kate read.

There was something she wanted to ask but she was a little afraid of the answer. She thought Kate was happy but wanted to be sure so she decided to bite the bullet.

“Do you regret it?” She asked Kate quietly.

Kate looks up from the paper.

“Regret what?” She inquired, clearly confused.

“Do…do you regret leaving the DIA and joining the FBI? Basically having to start again when you were just a breath away from a management position?”

She sees the surprise on Kate’s face.

Kate closes the paper and puts it on the table.

Kate takes a beat before responding.

“When I was in university I was working on my political science degree. I thought maybe I would end up working at the State Department or something but then Noah died. He was ambushed because of faulty intel. I wanted to make sure no one would feel the way I felt when I lost him so I decided to focus on working towards a job in Intelligence.”

Kate picks up her cup of tea from table and takes a sip before returning the cup back to the table.

She settles back and continues.

“When I started at the DIA I realized very quickly it wasn’t a place that really wanted their staff to show too much personality. That was fine by me. Noah was gone and I didn’t really want to do anything more than my work. I didn’t need to make friends with my coworkers. Work was black and white which suited me fine as well. It was like that for a few years but then one day my boss called me into his office and told me he wanted me to attend a conference in Hawaii. I thought why not. I hadn’t been to Hawaii before.”

Kate pauses with a small smile on her face. Lucy returns the smile but she’s too riveted to speak.

“I get to Hawaii and the conference is boring as sin but I have to attend all the events or I’d hear about it from my boss. After one particularly long and gruelling day, I needed a drink and some food. I went to a bar that’s near my hotel. As I entered the bar I looked around and noticed this absolutely gorgeous woman with beautiful dark hair and the most amazing eyes. I look away quickly though because I didn’t want to get caught staring. I ended up sitting down and ordering food. I looked down for a moment at my phone and when I looked up that amazing woman was standing in front of me. I don’t know what happened but she managed to get me to open up in a way I hadn’t in a long time. We ended up having a wonderful time during the rest of my time on the island. Then I had to go back to DC and that wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.”

Kate stops to take another sip of tea and then returns to her story.

“After my time in Hawaii I realized I didn’t want things to be so black and white anymore. I liked opening up. I tried to do it in DC but it didn’t work and so when the transfer to Hawaii came up I jumped at it. Imagine my surprise after I transferred when I walked into the bullpen and saw that amazing woman again. We realized we couldn’t date so I remained the capable DIA agent and she was that annoying woman from NCIS.”

“Hey!!!” Lucy interrupted.

Kate smiles at her with so much affection, Lucy quiets right down.

“The thing with working at DIA and dealing with your team was that I hated how at odds we always were. Not just with you but with everyone on the team. It started to feel like I wasn’t actually helping but was actively hindering. Then you and I started our Ill-fated first attempt at dating and I found out about the possible promotion. I didn’t want to leave you but I also wasn’t sure I wanted to be as firmly entrenched in the DIA anymore so I reached out to my FBI mentor. He encouraged me to look at the FBI as a possibility and I decided I wanted to. You and I ended, we both know why, and my time in the FBI began. Even though my personal life was in a shambles, my professional life was amazing. I had a great boss and a team that I actually wanted to grab a drink with. I didn’t care I was starting over again because in my new role not only was I helping NCIS, it felt like I was also helping people in general. Also my world was opening up a bit. So to answer your question, I don’t regret it at all. My professional life is great and now that we’re back together, my personal life is even better. Lucy, I was serious when I said you helped me be a more open person and my life is better for it.”

Kate stopped and stared expectantly at Lucy.

Lucy moved over to Kate’s side of the couch and kissed her.

Then she settled herself under Kate’s chin and felt Kate’s arms wrap around her.

“I’m glad. My life is better because of you too.”

Lucy watched from the kitchen as Kate sat on the sofa in the living room.

She watched as Kate’s head bowed and shoulders slumped.

It had been a hard assignment and Kate made it through but she seemed to be struggling with something in the aftermath.

Lucy grabbed a couple of mason jar glasses and placed them on the counter. She was about to pick up a bottle of wine but another glance in Kate’s direction had her picking up the tequila.

She poured some in each glass. She put the bottle away and picked up the glasses and walked over to Kate.

Lucy nudged Kate gently and handed her one of the glasses. Kate takes a giant sip, winces slightly but manages to swallow it.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Kate was silent for a moment unable to verbalize what she was feeling.

“Can we just sit for a bit?” She finally replied bowing her head again.

Lucy nodded and sat down.

She pondered Kate for a moment before leaning back.

“Come here.” She says quietly to Kate as she guides her head on to her lap.

Kate settles in. Lucy lightly brushes her fingers through Kate’s hair.

They stay that way for quite some time. Kate’s eyes had closed and Lucy thought she might have fallen asleep. But then Kate speaks.

“I was so scared. I was alone on the boat trying to stay alive and all I could think about is if I’d see you again.”

Lucy’s hand pauses. The same thoughts had plagued her as they were trying to get to Kate.

“I wish I could have been there with you.” Lucy confesses.

“You were. I heard your voice inside my head encouraging me. Telling me to keep fighting. I couldn’t have done it without you.” Kate admits.

“You did do it…and you came back to me.” Lucy says tenderly.

Kate shifts herself and turns to look at Lucy. She lifts her hand and gently caresses Lucy’s cheek.

“Always.” She whispers.

Lucy stares at Kate for a moment overwhelmed but realizing there is only one thing for her to say.

She bends down and kisses Kate softly.

After the kiss she lifts her head up and gazes at Kate.

“I love you Kate.”

She watches as surprise briefly flits across Kate’s face before a dazzling smile takes over.
