BONELUST PERSONAL COLLECTION: Some of my Collared peccary skulls, Pecari tajacu, including a juvenile. Notice the double upper tusks. _ Although the Peccary, AKA Javelina, may appear somewhat pig-like externally, they actually belong to their own family, Tayassuidae. The name javelina is Spanish and comes from their long, sharp, javelin-like canines. Peccaries use these sharp tusks to fight off predators. _ The collared peccary is a widespread creature found throughout much of the tropical and subtropical Americas, ranging from the Southwestern United States to northern Argentina in South America.
