3. what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?

i do my best to write in chronological order because that gives me the best chance of, you know, finishing a thing, but sometimes a scene grabs me by the throat and i have to sit down and write it no matter where it actually falls in the story

11. what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?

dialogue! god my dialogue is so much better than it used to be!

from blood & river water:

The main house is sparse but well-maintained. Everywhere, the dark wood framing is polished to a gleaming shine, and the shōji slide silently across the floors. The scent of fresh-cut flowers mingles with the smoke of Hi no Kuni’s distant fires. She could not be further from Uzushio if she tried.

The Uchiha matriarch is long dead, Natsumi explains, and so Mito-hime has been given her old rooms. She will spend this first night elsewhere, of course, but her quarters are freshly aired, and very fine.

There is a bottle of umeshu waiting for her there, tucked in an alcove near a small arrangement of blooms. Camellia, she notes, and pine; Tajima’s bitter victory. She looks away.
