            he hated that. hated being pitied, hated that look that tim had on his face. he fucking hates being pitied, hated being handled with kid gloves. it’s been a few months now, they’ve declared them dead for all intents and purposes. the searches are far and few inbetween, the most recent one being the first ‘recovery’ search, instead of a search for a live person. he’s upset. he’s pissed. they just didn’t look hard enough. still weren’t. they didn’t care. never would.

      maybe tim cared. maybe he’s the only one.

it ain’t a stranger at all.   it’s tim.   and if ashley knew him at all from the childhood they spent together — he might just say tim was angry.   (    ashley’s hand covers james’ as he lowers the pistol himself, quickly, wordlessly, trading a glance with james that told him to shut the door on his way out.   which leaves him unarmed and vulnerable when the door clicks shut.   some part of ashley insisted that tim wasn’t approaching him with intent to kill.   some part of ashley insisted that he was, and his gut twisted with the thought.   )

and then tim’s knuckles dig into his cheek, fist strikes jaw, and the aftertaste of whiskey is replaced by copper pooling on his tongue, white-hot.   he staggers.   hand comes up to shield his cheek.   once-worried eyes widen and glower, his scowl distorting the scar their father gave him.

‘ tim. ’   it’s low and mean.   a warning shot.   (   it’s more than what his fixer gave the den before he shot two men dead.   )   ‘ what the fuck. ’ 

      but he stays there instead. stays quiet, takes in a few breaths. trying to calm down. tim was his friend. he knew tim, tim knew him. it’d be okay. he liked tim! he’d been there for him. maybe he could help him, help him feel better. help him get out of here. he held his arms out, shaking badly. they could start there. “i-- i wanna go home.”

tessa knew the parameters of the mission and she knew what she needed to know about the target they were on their way to reacquire; the only person that she’d ever heard of to escape and remain free from that familiar captivity. she makes a split second decision in the helicopter on the way there, a hard yank on the controls leads to a fiery crash that leaves her fellow agents dead or dying. she’s injured as well, of course, but the tech in her body holds her together enough to drag herself out of the wreckage and start walking the remaining few miles to their destination.

she stays as hidden as she can, self aware enough to realize that the frayed wires and visible metal plates across her damaged body are far from subtle and the last thing she wants to do is involve a civilian. it’s slow going with one leg twisted out of place and her healing factor gradual enough that it’ll be a day or two before she’s back to normal, but it’s all she can do to hope that she’ll make it there before the crash sends him running. if he’s as smart as she thinks, tessa doesn’t have long.

            “ i don’t know what you’re talking about. ” it’s cold, he’s cold. there is nothing about him that is emitting any kind of warmth, anything of substance. he’s lonely. god, is he lonely. he hasn’t talked to his friends since that night. sam has tried, but he can’t. he can’t do it. he’s just so angry with all of them. he wasn’t as mad at chris at first-- but even he’s abandoned him to be up ashley’s ass all the time. as if she needed more care than he did-- she didn’t even lose anything that night. whatever. it’s fine. gene is his friend. it’s why he was there, right? like. all the time. and saying this nice thing about him. even if he couldn’t fully appreciate it.

      “ what i have inside me is anger. i want revenge, gene. i want them to hurt like i do. i want them to feel what they had to feel that night. they don’t-- they don’t even think they did anything wrong! ” what’s so beautiful about that? nothing. nothing is. he’s a horrible person. he wants to do horrible things. sometimes in the night he hears them tell him to do it, to do the most. telling him to scare gene away. which is what he’s trying to do, only friend be damned.
