Hi! What routine would you recommend for someone getting back into exercise/the gym? Maybe a routine for 3x a week or 5x a week? Thanks so much!
Try once a week! I know it sounds silly, but youâre building a routine that will hopefully last beyond this week or the next. If you consistently can make it once a week, then try twice. When you can do that for a few weeks, then try out three days, etc.
As for the routine itself, it depends on what your goal is! Iâll give an example. Right now Iâm at a low enough weight (in the healthy weight range) that Iâm not going to focus on losing weight. Instead, Iâm working out to build more muscle. Itâs a 6 day routine but split between cardio, core, and big/heavy lift days.
I highly recommend writing out your goal(s) before jumping into the routine. You can start by taking an intro to weightlifting class at your gym/YMCA/etc, you can look at r/xxfitness for some example routines or programs. You can start the couch to 5k and base your exercise days around that! Thereâs so many options.
Muscle and Strength has some of the best free routines based on goals. I use their lists all the time!
Huge online supplement store, workouts database and fitness education platform. Learn how to build muscle, burn fat and stay motivated.
Macro factor (a paid app) recently came out with their beta coaching program alongside their nutrition app which I love. I havenât used it yet but so far users seem to really like it. The app has coached routines, but trust me when I say you can find free ones online!
Finally, Iâll pitch Strong (app) again! If youâre like me and youâre unsure how to do an exercise sometimes or forget, the app lets you time your sets, track your best lifts, and gives you diagrams and actual videos of humans doing variations of the lift. Last time I checked it was free but had some paid features.
