God, he wished he could tell the man he wasnāt - but heād let them all down pretty badly. Ā āYou - you have family. Ā Not by blood but thatās hardly ever mattered to us. Ā Though I did tell the guy outside that Iām your cousin - and the legal name I have right now is Jimmy so. Ā Itās - itās complicated. Ā I can explain that if you want me to. Ā But you should know, Uncle Bill, itās not pretty. Ā You - you hurt us pretty badly.ā Ā God, it felt like his soul was being rubbed raw by this.
It was clear, that this pained him. Ā Frankie was still grieving - grieving for his innocence, grieving for his sister and his mother, and even grieving for his father. Ā For his uncle. Ā There had just been so much devastation and it felt senseless to him. Ā He didnāt know how exactly to wrap his brain around it.
His eyes watered a bit and he looked down at his hands. Ā It was hard to look at his uncle - he didnāt care about his scars but it hurt to look at the man heād trusted so much and, knowing how heād let them down.
When his apparent nephew spoke again, Billy felt uneasy. There was a writhing, coiling sensation in the pit of his stomach, as though a snake had settled in there and was slowly curling its body about his heart and squeezing tight. His immediate instinct told him not to ask, to quell the curiosity about his past and to beg the boy to explain himself.
āYou hurt us pretty badly.ā
Billy looked at the boy then, as Frankie looked down. The way in which he trembled, and his last words echoed again in Billyās mind. Swallowing hard, Billy hesitated, thinking...
No. He had to know. He couldnāt keep living in a dream. He had to face up to whatever he had done.
āWhat did I do...?ā

āHe knew about that day. There was a group while your father was deployed. Men of war. Hit men. It was called Operation Cerberus. One day your father snapped and attack the one in charged. Nearly killed him. So Billy took it upon himself to cut a deal.ā She moves over and takes a seat across from him. āThe man in charged wanted to silent those against him. Permanently. That meant Frank. Your mother. Your sister and you." Her hands rested to her thighs. "But you can't act on it. You can't let him know that you know." Her head shook. "I need you to play dumb. Like you don't know anything. If he even sense you caught on. He'll kill you. And make sure you don't come back."

āIām a paramedic, miss. Ā I canāt do a ton, but I promise you - I will do all that I can to help you. Ā Do you want to speak somewhere more private?ā Ā Frankie asked softly, his voice and expression gentle.
The display window of the flower shop was broken. Not only had the robbery left her shaken, but the broken glass that littered the floor brought up bad memories of long ago, of the closet, of her parents--
āI-I...ā she paused to catch her breath. Eyes red, and obviously distraught, Aimi pulled him aside and whispered, tears running down her cheeks,Ā āI-Iām sorry, I-I d-donāt know who did it, Iām s-sorry--ā
@juniorcastle/ @russkiyuragan ā„ād for a starter
It was his eyes. When she walked past him on the street, they made eye contact and her legs became glued to the concrete. Thatās one thing that doesnāt change about a person. They may get darker, hold more secrets, tell more lies, but their eyes will always hold their shape.Ā Her first thought was youāre wrong. Frankie is dead. She watched it happen. In fact, it was his death that, ultimately, saved her. But the feeling wouldnāt shake. Groaning for how embarrassing this was going to be, Lisa turned and followed him. Waiting about a block, then she pretended to slip and fall onto him.Ā āOh, shit. Fuck. Sorry. Ow,ā she rubbed the spot where his elbow collided with her ribs. Not his fault, she knew, but that didnāt mean it didnāt hurt.Ā āI didnāt see the crack in the sidewalk.āĀ

āIād avoid the next alley. Thereās some not so friendly people at the other end.ā

Maybe he had no good reasons to care for the kid these days - maybe heād forfeited that right (and title of honorary uncle) as soon as heād gained knowledge of the plans to kill Frankās family - but that didnāt stop that old twinge of concern in his chest - the one that proved he still had a heart somewhere deep inside.
Someone had put their hands on Frankie, and that someone was not destined to live much longer if Billy had a say in it.
āOf course I fuckinā care. And it is important.ā

āNo, I said what I meant. Youāre wrong, and you know it.ā
