An Open Letter to Hollywood
I may not be Hawaiian or have been born in Hawaii but I was raised there and I have some important to say: Stop using Hawaii as a prop. Stop using Hawaii as a back drop. Stop using Hawaii as a background. Hawaii is more than the stereotypes you make her out to be. Hawaii is a diverse community. Hawaii is a land of tradition and rich history. Hawaii is a melting pot. Show that on your movie screens. Bring colour to your big screens. Hawaii is filled with colour but you portray her as white. People say that it's 2015 and racism isn't over because it's TRUE. RACISM IS NOT DEAD BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU—THE MEDIA—CHOOSE TO PORTRAY. (the only reason this is coming up is because i saw a recent tweet calling out the movie Zac Efron is currently working on in Hawaii and how the extras were ALL white/caucasian).
i don't think so much about it when i do it but every day when i wake up i do this without a single thought proceeding it: every day i make a list. a list of people who love me. i make this list to show my self the reasons why i do what i do, why I don't give up in times of suffering, why i keep going. these people keep me motivated. they remind me of why i work for what i work for. but i always ALWAYS remember to have this person first before anybody else and that person is ME. My name is the first name on that list. because i do the shit i do for me—for a better ME. it's 4am and i have all this shit in my head and i really should get a dedicated book to write it all down.
