The Declaration Takes Shape: The Final Draft of Independence, 1776
On June 28, 1776, the final draft of the Declaration of Independence was submitted to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson with revisions from other members of the drafting committee, the document outlined the colonies’ grievances against King George III and declared the principles of liberty, natural rights, and self-government.
The submission marked a major turning point in the American Revolution. After months of conflict with Britain, the Continental Congress prepared to formally announce that the thirteen colonies would break away and establish themselves as an independent nation. The Declaration would be debated, revised, and officially adopted on July 4, 1776, becoming one of the most influential documents in world history.
