June 23, 2015. Emily in Gowanus. I dodged the remaining raindrops and took the R train to 4th Ave/9th Street and met my sister Emily at her apartment in Gowanus. She's in the process of moving out of the neighborhood to hike the Pacific Coast Trail this summer, so I was glad to have her participate in the project. We took a few photos in her kitchen and then strolled up 4th Avenue. Emily told me about a recent trip to Costco for a serious rations shop for her trip and how she's shipping them to different points along her route to be waiting for her. She said the post offices out there are used to it, hikers coming in off the trail grabbing a box for them postmarked a few months before. We met up with Julia for dinner and drinks and talked about Emily's trip to California, the summer, an upcoming family wedding in North Carolina, and the women's World Cup. Around 9 o’clock we noticed the orange glow of the solstice-season sky, and all of the Instagram photos documenting it shortly after. We all shared a slice of key lime pie for dessert, paid the bill and said goodnight.
