Striped Picture-Winged Fly - Idana marginata
In previous years, I've found this conspicuous insect to be a relatively rare find. However, I'm not sure what's going on this year, but there have been so many individuals of this particular specie flying around the backyard! If the previous posts are anything to go by, June seems to be their month of emergence and flight, but that doesn't explain why they've been so prominent this year. If anything, it serves as a reminder to gardeners everywhere: monitor your plants and look carefully for signs of growth or change. The only explanations I can think of are that there is a tantalizing decaying source of plant matter nearby or one of the backyard's pine trees has a sap leak somewhere. With regards to the latter, other species of North American Picture-Winged Flies are drawn to sweet sap and lap it up as a quick snack. I've seen many a Delphinia picta Picture-Winged Fly perch on some of the yard's young pines and diligently survey across the branches and tree trunk. It may not seem like much of an observation, but larger varieties of Ulidiid Flies - from my own observations - tend to either remain grounded in place or airborne. In essence, there has to be a compelling reason for them to walk around. With all this in mind, the individual seen in Pictures 1-5 doesn't have a compelling reason to walk around: it has a severely damaged right wing!
The wing itself is overall intact, but it appears deflated and twisted, leading me to think that this striped Fly's metamorphosis didn't go according to plan. Adult insect form development is a very complicated process, and sometimes errors happen during the pupation, but it's still unfortunate when something detrimental happens. Any adult insect afflicted with such a condition is grounded - denied the ability to fly - and can become easy prey for airborne predators. The striped pattern of this insect may lend it some effective Hymenopteran mimicry, but it is otherwise quite vulnerable to being picked off. Despite its arduous circumstances, the individual (of Pictures 1-5) tried to take flight while crawling around on my arm, but only found itself crashing to the ground. I can't fault this Fly for its determination, however futile. Inversely, Pictures 6-10 showcase a Striped Picture-Winged Fly specimen as it typically appears. With both of its marbled wings inflated, it can fan them out and signal its presence, thusly grabbing the attention of other nearby Flies. For the casual observer: despite its striped patterning and tipped abdomen, this specie is perfectly harmless. Without a damaged wing, they are hard to catch.
Pictures were taken on June 7 and 15, 2025 with a Google Pixel 8a. From Pictures 6-10, it appears that the Pixel 8a itself cannot get as close to insects as the Pixel 4 could. However, the stronger resolution for the 8a's zoom may be a fair trade off.
