Just got back from the Figurative Art Conference in Miami 👉@figartcon😎 and still basking in the afterglow with @candicebohannon — We did our first EVER live demo, on stage with a model...we were so nervous, but our audience was simply terrific, and it all went really well! Everyone was enthralled by the copper clad ACM panels from @artefexart and we even got into a little convo about Tad Spurgeon, my partial colorblindness, and my predominantly @rublevcolours palette, which included some all time favorites like their Lead White #2, Bone Black, and Cadmium Red Light. • The conference itself was like a dream...the Biltmore with her giant halls and beautiful coffered ceilings, her glorious courtyards filled with palm trees and Spanish style fountains, and the sweet balmy southern air blowing gently as flocks of chrome green parrots fluttered about her 1920’s era architecture...served as the romantic backdrop for the week’s events! I reconnected with old friends and met so many new ones, all of us sharing in a deep love and appreciation for the craft of representational painting. From the grand halls full of attendees painting from live models, side-by-side with some of today’s top artist, to the excellent panel discussions, and the outstanding live demos - I’ve never seen a conference more geared to the practice of painting and to the enjoyment and love of the actual act of art making. The eternal and the heroic are found in the eyes, expressions, and deeds of those around us. In the pursuit of “style”, and “technique”, and what can become a kind of obsession purely with the formal elements of art, I never want to lose sight of what matters most to me — the real person, and the actual experience. Otherwise it’s all pure abstraction and what the hell are we talking about if your ideas never touch the earth. Because it is through contact and intimacy with something outside your own mind that you gain knowledge, and understand things enough to love them. The power and implication of the human journey, of a persons soul at work in the world, is more than I can bare.
