Clearly the offspring of the AIRPLANE! and NAKED GUN franchises, Adam Shankman’s STOP! THAT! TRAIN! (2026, in theaters June 12) may not reach the dizzying heights of those pictures, but it’s still an awful lot of fun. Because I’m both pretentious and rather over-educated, I’ll also point out that it can trace its lineage back through THE MONKEES, The Marx Bros. and Rene Clair’s anarchic films. It’s part of a tradition of surrealistic comedies that probably goes as far back as Aristophanes, and that’s just what we know.

When Skank Rail goes out of business, best friend train hostesses Ginger Minj and Jujubee step in as last-minute replacements in the coach car of the Glamazonian Express. At first all they have to contend with is mean girl first class hostesses Brook Lynn Hytes, Marty Lauter (Marcia Marcia Marcia) and Symoné. Then a hard-working, under-appreciated train tracker (Rachel Bloom) discovers they’re about to head into a deadly megastorm that could send them careening into a nuclear power plant. President Gagwell (RuPaul Charles) wants to help, but she has to deal with her own demons from an earlier train disaster.

The jokes come at you like bees swarming the White House. Not all of them land, but before you can finish groaning, there’s a new one that likely will make you forget it. There are also plot elements that don’t get fully developed, like a detour through a haunted mine that never leads to any haunting. But there’s something ultimately utopian out of a film that revels in queerness and shows underdogs Ginger and Jujube growing in the face of adversity and the latter’s unrequited love for hunky assistant conductor Brian Jordan Alvarez. There’s even room for two musical numbers (the film could use more) and dozens of celebrity and not quite celebrity cameos featuring everyone from Jesse Tyler Ferguson to Charro.

This kind of material works best when the actors play it seriously, with top honors going to Bloom, who’s perfected this kind of deadpan absurdity. Ginger and Jujube are also smart enough to play it as though they weren’t expecting to get laughs, while the stand-out cameo is Sarah Michelle Gellar as Sarah Michelle Gellar, desperate to be recognized by a train full of people who’ve forgotten who she is. RuPaul has some funny moments as the president, but she’s also remarkably self-effacing in letting Ginger and Jujube be the real center of attention. There are a few roles that are almost painfully overplayed, and they just need to sashay away. But I’d give a hearty chanté you stay to most of the cast.
