However, the need to protect you and the bitter taste of jealousy can intertwine at times, making it very difficult for him to differentiate between the two. Which basically messes up his entire thought process and drives him absolutely mad, as he suddenly finds himself unable to think about your safety without this ugly bias. And if there is one thing Higashi really does not like, it’s being blatantly biased in a situation that requires objectivity.

Definitely does not talk about his lesser jealousy periods, partly because he is very much aware that you know of them anyways, but also because he does not wish to inconvenience you with problems that are his to solve. He will act as though they never happened, but should you try and prod him about it, Higashi won’t even try to dodge the questions. Instead, he is being very unemotional and clinical about the responses and though he never lies, it is clear that he has no interest in prolonging the conversation. You’ll find him eager to discuss his feelings only once he runs into a brick wall and there is no way to move past it without your help.

FUMIYA SUGIURA

Jealous Sugiura can be summarized in three words: clingy, whiny, competitive.

He does not take kindly to people flirting with you, he might be a bit more lax if it’s your friend and it maybe sounds like a joke but even then it immediately gets him on edge, and definitely is not okay with anyone touching you in any way, shape or form. Should he encounter such a situation or just sense that you may not be feeling comfortable around your interlocutor, this man will make the flashiest entry possible and immediately introduce himself as your partner. Just to make absolutely sure the madlad trying their moves on his beloved will get the message loud and clear, Sugiura sneaks his arm around you while looking them straight in the eye with the biggest grin he could possibly muster. Asserting dominance, they call it. And quite frankly, if you’re not terribly uncomfortable, he will gladly keep his hands on you long after the pest is gone. The jealousy makes him crave physical contact more than ever to the point of being, as aforementioned, quite clingy. No amounts of affection can really appease him in this state, so it’s just easier to let him have his way.

If he feels like you were letting the pest act like this, because they are your friend or you’re just used to that or whatever, maybe even did it specifically to make him jealous, Sugiura is going to whine. A whole lot. For like a week after the scene took place. He is persistent and determined, the kind of devil that won’t back down until he knows everything you do about the person that dared make him feel this way. Whether it is you who tells him after you’re done with “the attitude” or he scrapes together enough coins to get Yagami’s service, it doesn't matter. This man needs to know what he is up against, not because he feels like he might be lacking, but rather to find ways to one-up them. Show his beloved, that he can do better than that.

TORU HIGASHI

Nicknames are just not his thing, he feels like it’d be too much of a fuss to try and use them in a way that won’t make them awkward or ill-timed. Your name with no honorifics feels much more personal to him, much more loving and delicate and thus he will mainly refer to you this way. He may try to change his ways in case you feel uncomfortable about the name, but it doesn’t get any better than some cute diminutives or maybe “my love” at best. Doesn’t mind any kind of nickname himself, anything goes.

Higashi is an avid lover of cinema, older movies specifically. He’d be the one to moan about how movies nowadays are not what they used to be and yet would still attend every premiere showing he could spare time. As a result of his passion, he enjoys taking you out for cinema dates the most! He always knows which of the current movies may interest you - will also gladly listen to your opinions or suggestions on the topic - which cinema has the most scrumptious snacks and he is always prepared with all kinds of discounts for anything one could imagine. During the showing, Higashi is most likely paying more attention to the movie than yourself, no talking allowed, but he will offer you his hand to hold just to make sure that you’re still here with him. Once out of the theater, he’d be absolutely elated to have a stimulating discussion about the plot, quality and all the such of what you’ve just witnessed, maybe over a glass of wine or other beverage of your choice.

This man is the tidiest person you’ll ever find in the history of Yakuza games and finds it very, very enjoyable to do house chores together. Even if you’re not sharing a living space just yet, he’d be glad to do some cleaning up if he’d over at yours anyways. And, if you’re not one for cleaning, he’s going to make sure to make it fun so that maybe his zeal will rub off on you. His favourite kind of chore to complete together would be grocery shopping, especially in the evenings or late at night. Nothing quite as relaxing as strolling through the cool, empty alleys with your beloved at your side, bantering about whatever comes. Making plans for tomorrow’s dinner, grabbing random stuff from discount, sharing small affections here and there, away from the few prying eyes.

He keeps you a secret from the gang for as long as physically possible. It’s not like he’s in any way ashamed of you. If anything, he’s slightly ashamed of them. Higashi fears they’d pester you a lot, not exactly believing that their personal bitch baby would actually score a partner and taking it upon themselves to make you prove yourself to them. Not like you really have to prove anything, he boasts when they do eventually do that, you are absolutely amazing and there is just no way he can see that but they won’t. Still, at the beginning of getting to know you, Kaito may come off as a bit protective over his past underling, though Higashi himself often states that he is just mocking him like that. Nevertheless, they’re going to protect you as their own. 

MASAHARU KAITO

Will use every nickname he can possibly come up with and you better be ready to get called the cheesiest, most embarrassing ones in the book on a daily basis. Are you lost, babygirl? Because sometimes you may just end up wishing you were. With time he will learn to best suit the nicknames to you, knowing which ones not you use and what other ones make you tick better than most, slowly replacing your name with it. At some point he started carrying around a note with your full name in case anyone asked, because he absolutely forgets anything beyond my buttercup. A nickname that will allow you to get back at him surprisingly exists and it’s the god forsaken word “daddy”. While it’s not like he’ll get offended or in any way angry, Kaito can’t help but feel his guts twisting uncomfortably in his belly. It’s weird, he says. The weirdest “word turns into kink for no reason” he’s ever seen and no matter how many times he’ll hear it, it just doesn’t sit well with him. He will never get used to you calling him that and will always adorably scrunch his nose, maybe pop his tongue if the context is making him feel specifically yucky.

Everyone and their mother knows you are his partner. He gloats about you so, so much and by the time he’s done it is hard to believe for anyone listening that you are anything short of a deity. You do not have a shrine yet, but let him run around like that some more and who knows.

His ideal date is just… Cuddles. Whenever, wherever, Kaito just wants to be together and hugging. That’s it. At times he may provide a more romantic setup like taking you for a ride on the outskirts of the town, where you can park on the side overlooking busy parts of the town or maybe set a little stargazing session on top of the building where Yagami resides. Usually it’s just him dragging you into the first available seating at the house. Surrounded by the embrace of these strong guns you cannot really escape. He may allow you to do some things in the background, though. As long as it does not disrupt his cuddling session.

Positively giddy to finally be able to see your living space. He feels like it’s a nice leap forward in your relationship, especially if you’ve been keeping him on his toes about the matter for a longer while or maybe alluded to letting him stay the night. All the way to your doorstep he’s walking around with the biggest grin on his face, throwing around different kinds of jokes to lighten the mood. He is especially proud of anything that may just have made you blush, even if you’re trying to act otherwise. He’s trying his absolute best to release any uncomfortable tension that may be building between you, but the truth is that where his hands are casually folded behind his head, his fingers fumble around nervously. Kaito is just being impatient, one would think.

What you don’t see, unless you’re mad perceptive, is how this impatience is more of an anxiety. Surprisingly enough, this man is actually pretty worried about the whole thing. He fears doing something stupid, accidentaly overstepping your boundaries and making you hate him somehow. Or worse, have blackmail material to talk with Yagami about for ages. A history for the books, one that you won’t forget until your children (human, furry or maybe just a bunch of your friends) hear all about the biggest, most embarrassing misbehaviour of the infamous Masaharu Kaito and then pass it on.

Once inside, he will take his sweet time exploring all the rooms available to him, paying attention to all the trinkets you may have out there and each and every detail he can absorb that may reveal some side to you that he has never known. As he checks out any photos that may be laying around, Kaito makes sure to ask about anyone unfamiliar appearing in them, followed by a cheerful laughter at how adorable you looked in that particular one you like the least. If you let him, this man would LOVE to respectfully go through your wardrobe and look for anything funky or things that catch his eye even though he’s never seen yourself wearing the piece of clothing. He may just try on some in case you have something his size or larger.

If you have any animals… Well, watch out. Kaito may just adopt them by the end of the night! Somehow he’s got a way with every creature you may be hiding away at your apartment, specifically the furry ones, to the point when one may start speculating that it must be single cat mom Yagami rubbing off on him. You must admit, though. It is kind of cute seeing him try to play fetch with your friend, even if they do not know what fetch is in the first place, and then gently snuggle with them on your couch as he lets you take care of the dinner. On that note, both having you cook for him and getting takeout is fine with him. While he’d die for you to make him something, because what’s lovelier than whatever his beloved would make (and yes, that foolish belief applies even if you are a horrendous cook, he loves your cooking still), learning something about the restaurants nearby is definitely a good knowledge to have for the future.

TAKAYUKI YAGAMI

At the very beginning of the relationship, this man made it his priority to learn how to differentiate between your moods. He may not be the most empathetic guy around and he is very much aware of this fact, so instead, Yagami tries to navigate you the best way his detective brain can - with observation and deduction. He dusts off all the books on body language reading he can find over at the lawyer office to then spend weeks, months even, studying the little quirks of your behaviour. What began as a serious research, slowly became his guilty pleasure. Rather than watch you for signs, more often than not he just gets lost in taking you in, no science just feeling of adoration. And with time Yagami realizes he can tell your mood and even predict it ahead of time at times without much thought or observation. It becomes as natural as estimating weather whenever he looks outside of the window. And whenever you resound a dark cloud ready to burst? He launches his special procedure.

Yagami is known for leaving you many thoughtful and encouraging notes everywhere he can whenever life gets tough and he is not here to reassure you. He’ll stick it onto and inside your laptop, put one into your dinner box and make sure he slips some more into different pockets of your bag. No matter the situation you find yourself in, you discover he has an incredible way with words, the simplest and yet most effective ones, that always make you feel supported without a fail. Sometimes, when the case is extremely dire, he may even try his hand at leaving small drawings.

He finds it very relaxing to spend time with the multiple random cats lounging around his agency, with some soft music playing for the vinyl in the background and he certainly does try to try it on you. There is simply no way that you could date this man and not either love, like or at very least tolerate his tendency to pick up strays. In the worst case scenario his partner could be someone highly allergic to his furry friends, but Yagami makes sure to have some anti-allergy medicine stashed away in his office for this occasion specifically, so that you can fully enjoy the experience of calmly petting a purring cat pile. In addition, the music he puts on is 100% suited to your preferences, something that would make you comfortable and feel right at home, as he offers you a warm hug. After all, he does hope his office is your home as much as it is his.

MASAHARU KAITO

Kaito has some really strong senses when it comes to emotional intelligence and after some time in relationship he definitely grows a radar that allows him to feel you having a bad day from miles away. There is no need for you to say anything and honestly, he doesn’t even need to see you for this miracle to work. He just knows. Question his superpower all you like, but there is no way for him to explain it either. It’s just something that has worked for him ever since he can remember having strong bonds with people and both Yagami and Higashi, being the platonic side of this coin, can definitely vouch for that. Even if you try to act like nothing's wrong, he will know. However, he will be hesitant to bring anything up in that case. Not because he believes your ruse and doesn’t worry, but rather hopes that there is a good reason for you to hide your worries. You’ll come around, tell him what’s wrong, he hopes. 

His best immediate way to brighten your mood are his fabled video calls. The “i’m an old man and don’t know how to hold my phone to not look like a dum-dum” kind, though this time around he is specifically making sure that the view from his camera is as unappealing and as funny as possible. And though it might seem like he’s only down to a clown, Kaito is ready to make a 180 degrees turn the moment he sees you are in need of proper reassurement. He’s got a full list of the reasons why he loves you and why you are so very special ready to fire like a gatling gun at any given moment in time. By the time he’s done with you not a single bad thought can remain!

Whenever a more physical solution is available, this bear of a man will lock you in a long hug and keep his hands on you for the remainder of the evening. You wanna go and read something? Sure hun, but only if you are ready to do so while sitting in his lap - or in between his legs depending on what you find most comfortable - as he affectionately nuzzles into you whispering all kinds of sweet nothings. Or maybe these are just very bad jokes, with him it’s hard to tell one from the other. Kaito understands times get tough and more often than not he believes there is probably nothing he can say that will make you feel better, so he resorts to this affection as his way of reassuring you that he is and will be there for you come what may. He is a good listener though, even if at times he forgets to nod as he gets lost in the lines of your face.

FUMIYA SUGIURA

Out of the three, he is neither a splendid observator, nor an emotional psychic and does need some guidance from you to understand that you’re in need of cheering up. Of course unless you are being extremely obvious about it - he ain’t that dense. It’s just that these little subtleties are not exactly his specialty and while he will be on the lookout for your body language if that is your main way of communicating, Sugiura will feel more comfortable if you are a bit more straightforward with him. He may even end up proposing choosing - or making a new one, just for you - a specific emote on the messaging app that you can send whenever you need his emotional support, but do not feel like or cannot share the details just yet. Let it also be known that he will never make you feel lesser for relying on this often, this way of communication was used to be made and rather than annoyed, he actually feels proud that it made you comfortable enough to use.

Once Sugiura has received the emote, his special supportive procedure is set into motion. It always begins with a cryptic message. Something that will not be obvious but at the very same time not difficult enough to leave you additionally vexed and relates to where he is going to materialize. It doesn’t matter if you are at work or not, he will find his way to you. By the time you figure it out or exhaust all your ideas, the redhead finds you with a big, goofy smirk on his face and his eyes are gleaming with fondness as he offers you himself for the taking. Whatever you need he will offer, be it a hug, a shoulder to cry on, someone to throw your worries at or maybe a tender kiss. He definitely tries to gently prod you into explaining the reason for your poor mood in case he can maybe give out some advice or exact a little revenge on whoever got his darling like this, but definitely won’t do anything you’d tell him not to.
