I grew up in a family where music was very important. My father was a blues fan and my mother was more into a Dire Straits, Rolling Stones kind of vibe. Although my parents werenât musicians themselves, thereâs still always been crazy music at home. I had my phases, I would listen to everything and anything, from Daft Punk to Ed Banger, French rap, 2 bais de Neg, Assassin, NTM and American rap like DJ Quick, Dr. Dre, thanks to my cousins⊠After that I really got into reggae, thatâs actually the thing I fell for the most.Â
What was your first contact with the mix ?Â
Coming back from Australia I arrived in Marseille, I was working in a luxury kebab, a trendy place all broken down. The cook was a 40 year-old dad who had tones of vinyl. He was a real digger. I started mixing his nu-disco discs, he suggested I take mk2, I was 19 years old. At the beginning I would just do selecta, then I switched to reggae hip-hop vinyl without worrying of BPM etc. Itâs when I was 22-23 that I really went into mixing, so itâs been about 2 to 3 years that Iâve been mixing seriously.Â
What is BFDM ?
In the beginning BFDM was a collective, created in 2012 in Aix-en-Provence. Weâd organize parties in a bar âLe brigandâ with my friend Billy. I ended up following a chick and I arrived in Lyon 4 years ago. This is where I met everyone. After leaving the âsouthâ and after the end of the collective, I wanted to start a label and I did it. As early as 2013 I started an association, the idea was to do podcasts. My very first one was actually one of Sacha mambo. After that, thanks to my ex, I met Guillaume from the Pilotwings. We immediately bonded; we just talked on about music. I was in my room playing cds. After having talked to Guillaume about my project, he presented Louis to me. We ended up talking for 3h about my label project, sitting down on a leather sofa, drinking Leffes. Thatâs how BFDM started.
First release for the label ?
2014 first release for BFDM, Agorespace of Pilotwings. I had more or less given them a deadline, which was obviously not respected. They started sending me broken stuff like tech house, annoying 4 beats. After a number of sent demos, they laid Agorespace. I said âNik weâre doing it itâs dope!â. We were gone for 300 pressings. I had no idea if it was going to work etc. Just had to give it a go.
How would you describe the current exhilaration in Lyon ?
In the beginning Lyon was basically everyone doing stuff on their own side, but all that quickly changed. Weâre all the same age, between 25 and 26 years old. We realized that it would be smarter to work hand in hand. Emile opened, Groovedge opened. Thereâs really a nice atmosphere, even during parties. People donât come to pose, theyâre really here for the music. Itâs really nice to see whatâs happening. Other than your label you also organize parties, Straight Outta Babylone, Local Faya, tell us how it all started! At the start straights (small reference to NWA and Babylone, nickname given to the city of Lyon) were parties in flats, entrance 3$ and drinks 2$, although we did have some neighbor issues weâd end up being 80 to 100 people in those flats. Following that, my flat mate, Axel, showed us the Boxboys, a gay-swinger bar-club, rue Burdeau. We really liked the place, it was really what we were looking for, Berliner-type (Darkroom), and that underground side which really related to the label.
How do you sign an artist ?Â
For the Pilotwings it's a meet-up, j-zbel same. Then you get interposed meet-ups, but I havenât signed any guy met online for now. From all that I received and listened to, none of them made me want to do an EP with any of them. But in any case Iâd rather have physical contact rather then having it virtual, that way you immediately feel the other guyâs vibe. Iâd say Iâm the boss *laugh*, cause I created it all. Whatâs exciting in a label is to be able to discover guys, to produce them, to allow them to play, to promote them and to allow them to live, more or less. I donât do music, Iâm that guy behind, in the shadows, mixing in his room, even if Iâm turning more and more :-).Â
Future projects ?
One Bastards, a guy whoâs keeping his identity secret, whoâs between Lyon, Paris, Berlin. A repress of j-zbel. A new j-zbel comes in in April. A various with a bunch of Tim Schumascher admirers and in May thereâs a release of my flatmate Axel: DJ lastrack. We are now with our 7th release, by May 2016 weâll reach 9 releases. With all the interest arising on the label today, arenât you afraid that the underground side of it will get lost for larger audiences? No. I know who I am and who I work with. The attractive part in all this is the family thing about it. We donât care about individual objectives, weâre doing things cause weâre digginâ it, we want to give it all. The guys just signed an EP at Macadam Mambo, which stays in the same vibe. You canât hold guys from doing things elsewhere, I give advice, but I canât ban anything. The most important thing is to play. We really donât care about all that marketing side, we just want to make it nice for people, give some pleasure. The moment you start having people liking it, thatâs all you need, as long as you have fun and that we enjoy ourselves, thatâs whatâs important.Â
Why have it all released physically ?Â
Itâs a question of achievement. Iâm not criticizing those who only release online. Today Emile distributes us, but before that all pressings came form my own pocket. Iâd do the washing-up to be able to pay for the pressing. Part of the satisfaction comes from that; I really struggled coming out of that. And itâs also where I come from. I started with the vinyl and I will finish with the vinyl.Â
Is that electric side of BFDM important to you ?
A real DJ for me is someone whoâs able to mix any kind of music. When I go to Berghain I listen to techno for 15h, of course I go there to chill and have fun, but I find it much more interesting to have a guy start off on some nu-disco, puts on zouk, moves to hip-hop to finish on some gabber. You canât create a label and think you can just give out one style of music. I think itâs stupid to limit music to one name, one style. Music is really a broad thing, it would really annoy me to have to mix the same stuff all the time.Â
Labels you would like to collaborate with ?Â
Right now weâre receiving so many demands for collaboration, but I donât feel up for it, itâs kind of selfish. Otherwise there are guys that have been following us from the beginning, Antinote guys actually, thanks Zaltan. Thereâs also L.I.E.S, guys I really respect, Trilogy Tapes and of course Antinote. These are the three labels that really pushes me to do all my shitâŠÂ
 One last word ?Â
Big up to all the guys that have been following us from the beginning, guys from the south: Billy, Toto, Flipot, Marie aka Dalston, Charlotte, Jean, Bolly, Lyl Radio, Juliano, Groovedge, Simon Gi, CLFT, Gaetan, Leo de chez Emilie, Les Palma, Clement, BFDM artist, Sacha Mambo, Zaltan, Iâm forgetting many others but thanks to everyone !
