The Murder Game Revolution That Has Gripped China
Has anyone tried making an immersive experience over Discord?
(This will be less organized because I am so tired)
Think about it. You book, idk, 4 hours? 8? Like a superlong escape room or Jubensha. But it’s online. You get an invite to a Discord server and…
… and there are so many tools and corners in this software to hide things and find strange warnings or writings…
Start on just the #welcome-newbies page and have to read some quietly disturbing server rules and pick your roles. Talk to a mod (who seems nice), and then enter the main chat that’s… off. Somehow.
(Think of it like haunted IRC chat creepypasta as immersive improv.)
It’s quiet. Just a handful of users (played by a couple other online actors, ideally in a room or call together elsewhere to coordinate and GM your expertise). But sometimes you see some unknown name typing…
Do you go to check old pins? Or find archived threads or locked channels? Why is the mod talking so differently in them?
Does one of the other posters follow you from chat to chat? Why do they always react with an eye…
Say the right thing and get invited to a hidden side chat with a new role.
Say the wrong thing and you’ll have someone screaming in your mentions (if we want to get intense (and I do)), or pulling you into a small group sidechat begging you to lie to the mod you’re chatting to in a main channel.
And who is that always in the unnamed voice channel..?
———
In some ways this could be a Discord/forum-themed visual novel, but there’s nothing as responsive or organic (in ways we feel as players) as live actors. Haunted Houses, Jubensha, theater, etc.
I just keep thinking of playing that alone in my office on a grey, thunder-wrought afternoon, and letting the tone and the dread seep into me through the screen.
