Wait... I thought you had to keep your shoulders covered all the time when wearing lolita. So I can wear jsk without a shirt underneath?
I always say it depends on the JSK. I tend to feel that the notion of “your shoulders have to be covered at all times or else it’s not modest and therefore not lolita” is a bit old fashioned. Most of the time they do look best with something underneath because most of the time brands will design them around the idea that they will be worn with a a blouse and otherwise the coord can come off looking sort of unfinished, especially when the top of the dress is a bit plain. However, in cases where the top of the JSK is a little on the fancier side, such as it has a big elaborate collar or a lot of lace attached to the straps, they can look great without a blouse underneath (weather permitting of course.) So something like this, with just a plain square neckline and straps that don’t have any sort of embellishment will look best with a blouse underneath or a cardigan/bolero over top:
While something like these which have a little more going on around the collar area look great on their own:
You’ll also find that in some cases, like when I was talking about formal wear, if a coord is more formal or very elaborate, you can sometimes compensate for not wearing a blouse by making the rest of your coord a bit fancier. The same can sometimes go for if the dress itself is overall somewhat elaborate. (And there may be other cases where you’re more worried about suiting the formal occasion than the coord being 100% lolita which was sort of the direction I was taking the formal wear post.)
Over the years the “rules” that once dictated what is and isn’t lolita have sort of changed a bit. It used to be that nobody wanted to be caught dead in a JSK without a blouse, but nowadays the fashion has evolved in such a way that there are plenty of situations in which it is perfectly appropriate. I feel that it has become less about whether or not it’s okay to cover your shoulders and more about just what looks good. I will say this though: if you’re someone who is very new to lolita and new to putting together coordinates, it is still a good idea to stick to the blouse guideline for a while until you get more accustomed to putting together a lolita look and get a good idea of what works and what doesn’t. As I said before, a fair majority of JSKs are designed with a blouse in mind so it can sometimes be tricky to determine whether or not it will still make for a good coord without a blouse.

the sirens are singing your song~
shiro sighed, leaning his arms behind him on his surfboard.
he's been out in the water watching kids all day. waiting for something. maybe a life to save, or to yell at a kid who was swimming towards the limit point. or maybe to stop being asked questions, if his prosthetic can get wet. maybe he just wanted his shift to be over, so he could go home, shower and sleep.
he couldn't seem to pinpoint what he wanted to do. and at this point he didn't care what happened.
the water was peaceful today. unfortunately lowtide.
shiro closed his eyes feeling the light breeze, hitting his face and water tight suit. the bright red lifeguard recuse tube, floating next to him. the rope tied to his ankle.
"hey."
shiro's eyes snapped open, moving suddenly making his board tip and plungging himself into the water.
shiro quickly resurfaced, looking around for the person. he frowned not seeing anyone besides some kids and a few adults.
he swam back to his board, feeling weird.
then he heard it.
the beginning of saturn, flooding his mind. he knew the piece by heart.
how..?
shiro turned himself in the water, looking around, seeing if it wasn't in his head that someone, hopefully, was just playing it on a very loud speaker. but no luck.
then he saw it.
bright blue eyes, staring straight at him. his arms and legs moved slowly, keeping him above water. yet, frozen in the water, staring at blue eyes intently.
suddenly, shiro's swimming.
he doesn't know who blue eyes is. why is he swimming toward them?
why can't he stop?
the melody of the song gets louder in his head as he swims closer. he closes his eyes, water still hitting him as he swims.
he stops. so does the music.
"open your eyes."
he does.
blue eyes is right in his face. shiro can see the strange scales across their face. his eyes travel to the water, seeing glowing blue.
a tail..?
the music starts again.
blue eyes is smiling. shiro let's out a gasp, seeing razor sharp teeth.
shiro gains feeling back in his hand and raises his prosthetic on instinct. blue eyes stays in place, seeing to know shiro won't harm them.
shiro touches blue eyes' cheek, tracing the scales expertly.
then he remembers.
the sleepless nights where shiro would stay up, trying to remember the tan face with blue eyes and a pattern on his face. dream blue eyes' hair was dark, wet looking. no doubt brown when dried.
"you're him."
startled, blue eyes pulls away from shiro.
shiro tries to catch him before he can leave. he wants answers. he wants to know what blue eyes is and why does dream about them.
before shiro can properly grab them, the music comes back. pricing through shiro's skull, just as a big wave, fiercely pushes him away.
by the time shiro resurfaces, he's on shore his surfboard beside him. rescue tube no longer tied to his ankle, but floating aimlessly at sea.
shiro scans the water top, for any signs of blue eyes, finding none.
shiro sits on the sand, with unanswered questions, confusion filling ever fiber of his being.
i'll see you again, i'm sure of it.
