Being an individual who is unsure of what she has faith in, the concept of religion is very difficult to grasp. Rather than succumbing to the beliefs and values that my parents have placed upon me, I believe it is imperative for individuals to have a belief driven from the foundation of what they believe in - not what is pressed upon them. This being said, I have had the opportunity to witness multiple church services for various denominations; one of them being a church service for the Christian faith. Upon entering the church, I was unsure as to how to feel - being an outsider and a person of color, I felt that it was very obvious that I was not Christian. Much to my dismay and surprise, the individuals in attendance were very open and kind to me. The church service itself was an interesting experience. It began with worship, as the church sang in unison. Many of the lyrics had incredible meaning that was insightful into their faith and what they stood for. Afterwards, the pastor came out to address the people. He offered guidance and advice; many of which was useful to everyday situations. When thinking of church and all that goes with it, one does not usually take into account the importance or even relevance of certain topics encountered. Depending on the type of church you are attending, the pastor will offer tips and advice to those who may need it in everyday situations. It showcases the community within these churches and I found it to be very compelling. Witnessing individuals worship and praise what they believe in their own environment is a gift, and I am so fortunate to have been able to sit in and witness their service. I believe it is important and beneficial to people within our community to go out and learn about the people around them and try to understand their culture. You may never know what may touch you and what you will learn.
