I painted a little Jon Sims (there's a post with just the painting floating around) and here is the evidence of me trying to figure out the lighting. The marker drawing was me using a reference for pose and anatomy and then winging the lighting. I originally wanted to do this as a tapestry, but I got impatient since I haven't set up my bigger loom yet, and then I was having a difficult time making the image blocky enough to work as a tapestry, so I just decided to paint it. However, I could not for the life of me find a reference image of lighting coming from the eyeball, or even any examples in the style I was going for. I wasn't super satisfied with the winging it drawing (though I do think it looks cool), so I decided to just sculpt a little face so I could physically put the light where I wanted it. So now I have a little half-a-face, and it worked great. I have no usable pictures of it lit up correctly, so you'll have to trust me when I say the light falls like it does in the painting. I actually diffused the light a little farther than it did on the model, just so you can actually see a face.

The hair also gave me so much trouble. I did my first rendition yesterday and the hair looked like ass, its the main reason I tried again today, and I'm so glad I did. I think it turned really good actually, especially since I am not that great at hair, so hooray! The lighting is still a little iffy, but overall I'm happy with it.

I painted a little Jon Sims, with a glowing eyeball. I don't paint very often, so there was a lot of fussing around with this one. I painted it yesterday, decided it was as good as it was going to get, went to sleep, came home from work today and decided to just keep trying and I am much happier with it now. I'm doing another post with some of the idea process pictures, just because I felt that they were different enough from the result that I wanted a post without all of it. So the product!
