As Bill Shankly (manager of Liverpool FC during its successful period in the 1960s and 1970s) once said, “The socialism I believe in is everyone working for each other, everyone having a share of the rewards. It’s the way I see football, the way I see life.” Life under capitalism is a struggle; is there anything wrong with finding something that is exciting, enjoyable and occasionally dramatic? I wouldn’t want a socialist society without the fun gained from playing and watching sport.
