Object of Interest: A Red Painted Japanese Folding Chair (possibly Chinese), Edo period. This season on Mad Men we've noticed Bert Cooper has added to his collection of Japanese art and furnishings with a red painted folding chair similar to our own.Â
The Hall Chair
Inspired by examples from continental Europe, the hall chair was introduced in Britian in the early 18th century. Positioned in the entrance of formal houses, hall chairs provided the practical function of offering momentary rest to visitors, while also acting as a vechicle to assert prestige and convey lineage through a family crest or coat of arms. Here Jonathan has chosen a few fine examples to share.

Object of Interest: A Finely Carved Bombay Mahogany Bed. Dating from the second half of the 19th century from Bombay, India, the magnificently carved mahogany bed frame features opposing lions and peacocks above a motif of urns issuing flowers and foliage. The bed's carved spiral-twisted posts with carved rosettes and foliage ascend to ionic capitals, which support a contemporary metal canopy fitted with custom muslin drapery.
