It's like CS owners continually move backwards.
I remember when Jolleraptors and Grems used to be pretty hyper-specific about how you drew things. Then the owners grew up (well, not Densy, she was just after money) a little. Now as long as your design doesn't look loophole-y, it's got a good chance to pass.
It's a CS, so things have to be on-model to a certain degree or it's not the CS. It's just...given how uNiQuE most CS actually are, it's not THAT BIG OF A DEAL to give people some wiggle room.
I promise, your bunny-doll/sock deer/whatever will still look like the CS. Look at Chams. They're all over the place and a huge number of them are recognizable just from a thumbnail if you're familiar with the species!
It's especially egregious when staff and GAs don't follow their guidelines to the letter. And let's be real--most of them don't! Because they don't like their creativity restricted. They sure do like their power trips, though.
