Guilt
Waiting for Earthlings to buffer and I watched the trailer whilst I was waiting, I'm already on the edge of tears from the trailer and I'm so angry at everything, there's so many things that need to be said.
The fact that so many people use the argument against veganism being 'vegans are preachy' and 'they act superior and look down at me from their vegan pedestal' and that 'vegans try to force their belief down my throat'. First, all day, every day I have to see people in restaurants tucking into a bacon salad, I walk past people chewing down sausage rolls in the street, I can't walk down a street without seeing posters of KFC's new box meal or McDonald's happy meal on the side of a bus. So when you speak to a vegan and get defensive because they lay down hard facts about where your food and clothes come from you decide that they are being unreasonable because you're being subjected to information you don't want to know about. Think about the hypocrisy before that argument even forms upon your lips and now get to thinking about why you are so defensive in the first place. You're not angry because they are telling you facts about the industries you support, you're not angry because they are looking down on you for your lifestyle. It's because you are so ashamed of yourself for knowing this information but deciding to ignore it anyway. The 'vegan preacher' isn't making you feel inferior in anyway, you just feel that way because deep down you feel guilty about the important issues you choose to brush aside and you get embarrassed if anybody even has the audacity to challenge you.
I find it extremely difficult that the people I love, my friends and family, are largely omnivores and some don't seem to understand the concept of veganism. I would like to just lay down that I've not been a die-hard vegan my whole life, or very long, and I make some major screw ups and none of that can be taken back nor is it acceptable. I lose respect for myself in these situations and thinking about my own ignorance and ability to look the other way. I think back to a time only last year when a vegetarian friend owned a 'meat is murder' t-shirt and another friend and I joked about getting a similar one with 'tasty, tasty murder' written underneath. This whole scenario on it's own absolutely disgusts me, my unthinking attitude to what I was even saying and my dissociation between the words and the meaning behind them. I want to forget about the whole thing because it makes me entirely uncomfortable to think of myself as being so callous and stupid about what is a very serious issue. And it is a serious issue, one I hear brushed aside with unthinking phrases like 'I couldn't give up bacon' and 'meat is just so tasty', are you kidding? Are you even that selfish that you don't give a fuck about the ongoing torture, rape and killing of animas just because giving up your favourite food would be difficult? Can my own mother not see how messed up it is to cuddle with our three dogs, adore them, treat them as family and at the same time every morning she ritually has cereal with milk and every Sunday a dead cow or chicken or turkey or lamb sits on our table I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND IT I WANT TO SHAKE EVERYBODY AND TELL THEM THAT IT'S ALL JUST WRONG.
This argument doesn't even have much structure, it's broken up and all over the place and there's so many things I want to say but I don't have enough time tonight and I don't even know how to put it into words.
