Review: Widespread Panic - “Street Dogs for Breakfast"

Widespread Panic gets into a stompin’, New Orleanian groove with “Street Dogs for Breakfast,” a new song now available for streaming.

With lead vocals by JoJo Hermann, “Street Dogs for Breakfast” features the WSP keyboardist on rollicking, ragtime piano, while guitarist Jimmy Herring chimes in with stinging leads on slide. The song follows a lovable loser as he self-destructs in the Big Easy.

Street dogs for breakfast, whisky sours for lunch/sometimes you gotta bottom out to really find yourself, Hermann and rhythm guitarist John Bell harmonize on the chorus.

“Street Dogs for Breakfast” is the second track, along with the unremarkable “Steven’s Cat,” to emerge from Widespread Panic’s forthcoming album Street Dogs, due Sept. 25.

WSP’s 12th album was laid down live in the studio and features Duane Trucks on drums. Trucks, currently on tour with WSP bassist Dave Schools, Todd Snider and others in Hard Working Americans, has been filling in for original Panic drummer Todd Nance, who went on hiatus in late 2014 to deal with undisclosed personal issues.

But Bell tells Billboard magazine Nance will return to the fold in 2016.

“It’s been fun playing with (Duane),” Bell said. “But Todd’s on his way back.”
