An oak and pine(?) joined desk box/document box/bible box. Slant front writing surface, three drawers inside. Batwing hinges with rosehead nails Chip carved front panel "AP 1751". Constructed entirely of riven wood, oak pins, rosehead nails. Bottom pieces are joined with oak dowels. Center and right drawer faces and fascia are made of a very dense pine. Right drawer has a secret compartment (sliding cover is missing) made by drilling and chiseling into a thick bottom board. Wrought iron lockset/ hasp and left drawer were replaced in the 19th century. I will be pursuing a replacement lockset and hasp. The construction style and components (17th century) seem earlier than the chip carved 1751 date on the front panel. #biblebox #deskbox #documentbox #joinedbox #pilgrimcenturyfurniture #rivenwood #oakbox #chipcarved #antiquebox @iowacityart (at Iowa City Art & Antiques) https://www.instagram.com/p/COFzIh-HLW8/?igshid=puhip341ja77
